The San Diego Padres had a rough day<\/a> on the diamond on Sunday. The question when it was all over is who had it worse, the pitchers or the hitters? Padres pitching allowed nine runs in the 9-1 loss but managed just five hits off Giants pitching. Two of the five San Diego hits went for extra bases, however the Padres did not have another hit after the sixth inning. San Diego returns to the Peoria Sports Complex in Peoria, Ariz. to host the Athletic on Monday at 12:10 a.m.<\/p>\n

Padres general manager A.J. Preller is always looking for ways to improve his roster or organizational depth. He showed that once again with the signing of free agent Alex Verdugo<\/a> to a minor league deal.<\/p>\n

With the World Baseball Classic set to begin, the Padres participating in the contest have left the Spring Training complex and their positions on the field, which means other players will have an opportunity<\/a> to get more reps and show they belong on the roster. AJ Cassavell of Padres.com breaks down some of the competitions and the candidates who will be filling the roles.<\/p>\n

German Marquez got his first taste of Cactus League action since joining the Padres and it did not go as well as he would have liked. He was touched up for three runs over two innings<\/a>, but he got unlucky a few times as soft flyballs found their way to the grass, which meant he had to deal with base traffic for most of his outing.<\/p>\n

Bryan Hoeing was dealing with soreness in his elbow and has been shut down by the Padres<\/a>. Other San Diego relievers, Ron Marinaccio and Alek Jacob are going to compete in the WBC and are looking to take advantage of a global stage.<\/p>\n

Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune wrote about the battle for the bench position<\/a> on the Padres roster and look at specifically how players like Mason McCoy, Bryce Johnson or Jose Miranda could take advantage of their teammates competing in the WBC.<\/p>\n
