Eric Dane<\/a>,\u00a0star of hit television shows\u00a0“Grey’s Anatomy” and “Euphoria,” died of respiratory failure, according to his death certificate. <\/p>\n

Dane died last month at the age of 53, nearly one year after announcing he had been diagnosed with ALS,<\/a>\u00a0a progressive disease that attacks nerve cells controlling muscles throughout the body.<\/p>\n

Dane was survived by his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two children, 15-year-old Billie Beatrice and 13-year-old Georgia Geraldine. <\/p>\n

His family said Dane spent his final days, surrounded by friends and family. <\/p>\n

“Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight,” the family said in a statement to NBC News. “Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he\u2019s received.”<\/p>\n

Dane’s popularity rose in the mid-2000s when he was cast as Dr. Mark Sloan, aka McSteamy, on the ABC medical drama \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy.\u201d He played the role from 2006 until 2012 and reprised it in 2021. <\/p>\n

The late actor also played Cal Jacobs, a troubled married man, in HBO’s\u201cEuphoria.\u201d<\/p>\n

After being diagnosed with ALS, Dane became an advocate for ALS awareness.<\/p>\n
