Detectives in Long Beach have launched a homicide investigation after a fatal shooting\u00a0Sunday caused chaos in the busy downtown corridor and disrupted the grand opening\u00a0of\u00a0Nipsey Hussle-inspired restaurant Marathon Burger.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0March 1\u00a0event celebrating the opening of\u00a0the\u00a0third burger spot under the late rapper\u2019s music, lifestyle and entertainment brand Marathon\u00a0drew large crowds\u00a0to the area of Pine Avenue and East Broadway.<\/p>\n

Long Beach Police Department officials said officers assigned to patrol the area heard an altercation\u00a0unfolding just after 3:30 p.m. and, while responding, heard gunfire coming from inside a parking garage in the 200 block of Pine Avenue.<\/p>\n

\u201cOfficers responded and saw a male adult victim with a gunshot wound,\u201d\u00a0a\u00a0LBPD news\u00a0release<\/a>\u00a0stated. \u201cOfficers rendered medical aid until relieved by Long Beach Fire Department personnel, who transported the victim to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two\u00a0additional\u00a0male\u00a0victims who suffered non-life-threatening injuries were\u00a0located\u00a0and taken to the hospital for treatment.<\/p>\n

All three\u00a0victims\u00a0were in their late teens or early 20s, police said.<\/p>\n

Tyerae\u00a0Bailey, who\u00a0witnessed\u00a0some of the ordeal,\u00a0told KTLA that about 50 to 60 people were waiting in line\u00a0outside Marathon Burgers when,\u00a0all of\u00a0a\u00a0sudden, the crowd started running after shots rang out down the block.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was\u00a0literally chaos\u00a0for like 10 or 15 seconds. I ducked behind one of the little boards you take\u00a0photos\u00a0at\u00a0over\u00a0there,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cI only\u00a0heard\u00a0one gunshot.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0actually what\u00a0made me really lock in and take cover.\u201d<\/p>\n

In\u00a0cellphone video obtained by KTLA<\/a>\u00a0that captured the\u00a0immediate\u00a0aftermath of\u00a0the\u00a0violence, two people, a male and a female, were seen being placed into the back of separate\u00a0police cruisers. However,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0unclear\u00a0if they are suspects in the investigation.<\/p>\n

Detectives said on Tuesday that no suspect information is available at this\u00a0time\u00a0and that\u00a0a motive in the deadly shooting\u00a0remains\u00a0unknown.<\/p>\n

A slew of well-known artists, including Snoop\u00a0Dogg,\u00a0who is an investor in the burger franchise, Stevie Wonder and\u00a0YG,\u00a0attended the event. Hussle\u2019s older brother, longtime\u00a0collaborator\u00a0and the person\u00a0ultimately responsible\u00a0for bringing the slain rapper\u2019s vision to life, \u201cBlacc Sam\u201d\u00a0Asghedom,\u00a0along with\u00a0Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson,\u00a0also attended the red ribbon cutting ceremony.<\/p>\n

A Marathon Burger spokesperson told KTLA that shooting was in no way connected to the location\u2019s grand opening and that the restaurant remained open despite the\u00a0very large\u00a0crime scene cordoned off by police\u00a0that closed the promenade between Broadway and Pine Avenue for hours.<\/p>\n

The mayor later released a statement saying he was outraged and saddened by the violence\u00a0but grateful for local law enforcement\u2019s swift response.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me be clear: we will not allow violence to\u00a0define\u00a0our downtown\u00a0or undermine the progress we are making,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cWe will not retreat from investing in safe, active public places. Public safety\u00a0remains\u00a0our top priority.\u201d<\/p>\n

The identity of the deceased victim is being withheld pending\u00a0notification of next of kin by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.<\/p>\n
