{"id":202388,"date":"2026-03-03T16:41:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-03T16:41:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/202388\/"},"modified":"2026-03-03T16:41:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-03T16:41:08","slug":"waymo-grilled-about-1500-stalled-cars-during-december-blackout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/202388\/","title":{"rendered":"Waymo grilled about 1,500 stalled cars during December blackout"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body text-left\">More than two months after a widespread power outage left hundreds of Waymo cars stalled in city streets, the company struggled to assure San Francisco officials that it could avoid a similar failure during another emergency.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body text-left\">At a Board of Supervisors hearing Monday, apologetic Waymo spokespeople said they had upgraded automated alerts to better flag major problems, such as when stoplights go dark during a blackout. The robotaxi company also said it had increased staffing, but did not provide specifics and indicated it would continue relying on first responders to move malfunctioning driverless cars out of the way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body text-left\">The PG&amp;E power outage on Dec. 20 left one-third of San Franciscans without electricity for hours, and left some parts of the city in the dark for days. Many complained to 311 and on <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AnnTrades\/status\/2002589681385668622?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2002589681385668622%7Ctwgr%5E85429b31b269246ebb8ab9466dec4deaad725352%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fembeds.sfstandard.com%2Fembed%3Fid%3D524ae3a4-c53f-4485-9d4f-042762ebd354\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">social media (opens in new tab)<\/a> about confused Waymos <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/12\/23\/wtf-happened-waymo-blackout-industry-experts-have-guesses\/\" data-post-id=\"07f21cab-17d3-4f7e-b841-fb29c91bde2b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blocking traffic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body text-left\">Michael Magee, public policy manager of Waymo, acknowledged that corporate officials didn\u2019t proactively contact the city about the outage. The lack of communication was clear early on during the blackout \u2014 Mayor Daniel Lurie had texted Waymo\u2019s co-CEO when the power went out but at first received only <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2026\/01\/09\/dark-blackout-meltdown-waymo-stays-mum\/\" data-post-id=\"db376dd8-ad7e-4004-a7b8-5ff6be415857\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">emoji replies<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body text-left\">\u201cWe acknowledge today, again, that we did not meet our standards during the outage,\u201d Magee said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body text-left\">Waymo\u2019s fleet stopped <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.cpuc.ca.gov\/PublishedDocs\/Efile\/G000\/M599\/K162\/599162516.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">1,593 times (opens in new tab)<\/a> for two minutes or more during the outage, according to company data shared with the California Public Utilities Commission last month. Waymo had to send staffers or tow trucks to retrieve 64 of its Jaguar I-PACE electric cars during the blackout. In two cases, city first responders had to get behind the wheel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body text-left\">The city\u2019s 911 dispatch center began receiving reports of marooned Waymos between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Dec. 20, Carroll said at the hearing. As darkness fell and the vehicles failed to see the switched-off traffic signals, the stalls mounted.\u00a0 Getting the cars moving again required a \u201cconfirmation check\u201d from one of Waymo\u2019s 70 remote assistance operators, a Waymo spokesperson said after the hearing. These operators, however, can\u2019t remotely drive the vehicle \u2014 that still requires a person in the driver\u2019s seat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body text-left\">The surge of stalled vehicles created a backlog for Waymo\u2019s staff, leaving some cars sitting idle for longer than expected, said Chinmay Jain, director of product management.
