MELANIE. OH FOR SURE. THERE WERE SO MANY ASTRONOMICAL. CAN WE SAY ASTRONOMICAL ENTHUSIASTS? WE’RE GOING TO. WE’RE GOING TO GO WITH THAT THIS MORNING. WE HAVE CALVIN DOMEYER. HE IS PART OF THE ASTRONOMY CLUB. AND WE’RE RIGHT NOW TOWARD THE VERY END OF THIS EVENT. CORRECT? CORRECT. THERE’S JUST A SMALL LITTLE BITE TAKEN OUT OF THE MOON RIGHT NOW. SO ALMOST LUCKY FOR US, THROUGH THE MAGIC OF TV, WE HAVE VIDEO TO ROLL OF THE EVENT THAT HAPPENED OVERNIGHT. TALK US THROUGH WHAT THIS LUNAR ECLIPSE ENTAILED THROUGH THE EARLY MORNING HOURS. YEAH. SO A LITTLE BEFORE TWO, THE SHADOW OF THE EARTH STARTED COVERING THE MOON, AND WE COULD SEE THE MOON GETTING MORE AND MORE COVERED, GOING THROUGH ALL THE PHASES OF THE MOON AND REALLY FAST MOTION. THEN WE HAD ALMOST AN HOUR OF WHAT THEY CALLED THE BLOOD MOON, WHERE THE MOON WAS A LITTLE BIT REDDISH COLORED FROM LIGHT SCATTERED THROUGH THE EARTH’S ATMOSPHERE. AND NOW IT’S BEEN COMING BACK OUT. AND ANOTHER TEN MINUTES OR SO IT’LL ALL BE DONE. AND FOR ANYONE WHO CAPTURED IT OVERNIGHT, THEY HAPPENED TO GO OUTSIDE. IT WAS SUCH A SIGHT TO BEHOLD. WAS THERE ANY QUESTION IN YOUR MIND THAT YOU WOULD COME OUT HERE AND WATCH IT IN THE OVERNIGHT HOURS? NO, NO, IT’S SOMETHING THAT MY WIFE AND I DO A LOT. WE LIKE TO SHARE OUR ASTRONOMY HOBBY WITH ANYONE THAT’S INTERESTED. SO SHE DOES A LOT OF THE PRESENTATIONS. I USUALLY BRING OUT TELESCOPES AND WE TAKE A LOOK. IT’S A LOT OF FUN. AND AS YOU HEARD CALVIN SAY, IT’S ALL SORT OF WRAPPING UP RIGHT NOW. BUT WE’LL CONTINUE TO BRING YOU PICTURES FROM THE OVERNIGHT HOURS IN CASE YOU WERE ASLEEP OR JUST WAKING UP AND YOU MISSED IT. IT WAS A LOVELY EVENT. NOW COMING TO AN END. AND WE HAD A LOT OF PEOPLE OUT HERE WATCHING IT WITH THE ASTRONOMY CLUB. IT’S IT’S ONE OF THOSE THINGS YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS. SO YOU’RE LUCKY THAT WE DO HAVE VIDEO OF IT. DEIRDRE AND TEO BACK TO YOU. YOU KNOW, LIKE, OUR ALARMS GO OFF AT THAT TIME EVERY DAY.

PHOTOS: Northern California viewers capture total lunar eclipse

   Updated: 8:53 AM PST Mar 3, 2026

  Editorial Standards ⓘ

      SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

Space lovers in Northern California got to enjoy a total lunar eclipse overnight Tuesday.

The moon was a rusty shade of red and could be seen prominently in the sky.

Viewers across Northern California shared their photos of the moon.
