California public schools can now inform parents if students identify as transgender or nongender conforming without getting the child\u2019s approval, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday in response to an emergency appeal from a conservative legal group.<\/p>\n

The high court\u2019s order blocks a 2024 California law denying automatic parental notification from schools if students change their gender expression or pronouns in class.<\/p>\n

The Thomas More Society represented Catholic parents who said the law secretly assisted children\u2019s social transition without their approval and despite objections, according to coverage by the Associated Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The state argued that students were entitled to their right to privacy concerning gender expression and should be allowed to come out to their families on their terms.<\/p>\n

The Supreme Court\u2019s majority\u2014the three liberal justices dissented\u2014sided with parents, reinstating a lower court order.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe parents who assert a free exercise claim have sincere religious beliefs about sex and gender, and they feel a religious obligation to raise their children in accordance with those beliefs. California\u2019s policies violate those beliefs,\u201d the majority wrote in an unsigned order.<\/p>\n

The rights of parents and LGBTQ+ students in local school districts are part of an ongoing national debate, according to the AP.<\/p>\n
