{"id":202843,"date":"2026-03-03T22:22:23","date_gmt":"2026-03-03T22:22:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/202843\/"},"modified":"2026-03-03T22:22:23","modified_gmt":"2026-03-03T22:22:23","slug":"californias-snowpack-is-far-behind-and-time-is-running-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/202843\/","title":{"rendered":"California\u2019s snowpack is far behind, and time is running out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Despite our mid-February storms, California\u2019s snowpack still needs a lot of help, according to state water managers, and the clock winding down to when peak runoff begins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Officials with the state\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/water.ca.gov\/News\/News-Releases\/2026\/Feb-2026\/February-Storms-Provide-a-Much-Needed-Boost-but-Statewide-Snowpack-Remains-Below-Average\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Department of Water Resources;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Department of Water Resources<\/a> trudged into the Sierra snow at Phillips Station on Friday for the third survey of the season. And while the landscape looked far whiter than it did a month ago, the numbers weren\u2019t encouraging.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The survey recorded 28 inches of snow depth and a snow water equivalent of 11 inches, just 47% of average for that location. But the Northern Sierra, home to the state\u2019s largest and most critical reservoirs, was at just 46%, officials said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Historically, the snowpack peaks on or near April 1, after which it begins melting and feeding California\u2019s rivers and reservoirs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWater supply in California increasingly depends on a small number of big storms,\u201d said DWR Director Karla Nemeth. \u201cThe dramatic wet-dry swings this winter remind us again that ever-warmer average temperatures have reshaped the California water cycle. We must adapt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Nemeth said the shifting climate means the state must modernize infrastructure to capture more water when those major storms do hit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Despite the thin snowpack, the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/droughtmonitor.unl.edu\/CurrentMap\/StateDroughtMonitor.aspx?CA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:U.S. Drought Monitor map;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">U.S. Drought Monitor map<\/a> still shows all of California free of drought conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc.
