The Police Commission<\/a>, the civilian agency overseeing the Oakland Police Department, is inviting the public to weigh in on the search for the department\u2019s leader at six upcoming community forums.<\/p>\n All forums are free and open to all. Meetings will also be broadcast via Zoom<\/a> for those who cannot attend in person, though it will be listen-only.<\/p>\n The commission will give residents the opportunity to share their preferred qualifications, priorities, and attributes for the next top cop.<\/p>\n Community surveys and more information on the recruitment process are on the city\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n Schedule of community forums for Oakland\u2019s police chief search<\/p>\n Wednesday, March 11 \u2013 East Oakland Thursday, March 12 \u2013 Temescal Sunday, March 15 \u2013 Dimond Wednesday, March 25 \u2013 Fruitvale Monday, March 30 \u2013 West Oakland Thursday, April 2 \u2013 Chinatown What\u2019s the timeline for recruiting the next OPD chief?<\/p>\n The recruitment process started on Feb. 20, according to the Police Commission.<\/p>\n From March through early April, the commission will host six community forums to hear residents\u2019 thoughts on what they\u2019d like to see in the next chief.<\/p>\n On April 23, the Police Commission will present its findings from those forums to the public during one of its regular meetings.<\/p>\n From late April to early May, the commission\u2019s chief search ad hoc committee will interview candidates for the job. Historically, those interviews have been accessible to the public.<\/p>\n From early to mid-June, the full commission will present a list of three finalists to the mayor\u2019s office.<\/p>\n In mid- or late July, Mayor Barbara Lee will announce her pick for OPD\u2019s next police chief.<\/p>\n The timeline is subject to change, according to the commission.<\/p>\n The hunt for Oakland\u2019s next top cop comes after former Chief Floyd Mitchell stepped down<\/a> in early December after roughly a year and a half on the job.
