The San Diego Gulls are ready to go head-to-head with their cross-state rivals the San Jose Barracuda tonight at Tech CU Arena (7 p.m. PST; TV: AHLTV on\u00a0FloHockey; Radio: Gulls Audio Network).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Tonight marks the sixth game\u00a0of the\u00a0eight-game\u00a0series San Diego and San Jose have scheduled this season. The Gulls have gone\u00a02-0-1-2 against the Barracuda so far and hold\u00a0an\u00a0all-time\u00a0record\u00a0of\u00a051-26-6-2 against the team.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
“We\u2019re so\u00a0focused\u00a0in\u00a0on\u00a0us\u00a0and the way\u00a0that we want to play,”\u00a0head\u00a0coach\u00a0Matt\u00a0McIlvane\u00a0said. “We feel like our game can\u00a0drive success\u00a0for ourselves\u00a0and of course\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0some small tactical changes you make\u00a0opponent to\u00a0opponent,\u00a0but\u00a0I think\u00a0the focus\u00a0is in\u00a0on us.\u00a0The\u00a0lessons that we learn,\u00a0its\u00a0not just\u00a0against San\u00a0Jose, its\u00a0forever.\u00a0We know what\u00a0drives\u00a0our play\u00a0and we\u00a0gotta\u00a0play to\u00a0have success\u00a0and\u00a0then\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0just a matter of\u00a0going out and\u00a0doing it.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
This contest will end a three-game road trip for San Diego. The team has posted a\u00a014-7-5-0 record on the road this season and took three of four\u00a0possible points\u00a0on their road trip down in Texas against the Stars\u00a0last weekend. San Diego took the first game 2-1 but fell in overtime in the second matchup, 6-5.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Last weekend saw great defense and offensive production from the Gulls. The team held Texas\u00a0to\u00a0only one goal and\u00a029 shots\u00a0in\u00a0Friday\u2019s\u00a0game.\u00a0Nathan Gaucher\u00a0and\u00a0Justin Bailey\u00a0were the scorers of the night while\u00a0Calle Clang\u00a0guarded the net. Saturday\u2019s game saw\u00a0a pair of goals from\u00a0Nikolas Brouillard, a shorthanded goal from\u00a0Tyson Hinds, a powerplay goal from\u00a0Sam Colangelo, and\u00a0a goal from\u00a0Yegor Sidorov.\u00a0Tomas Suchanek\u00a0took the crease for the second game of the series, stopping\u00a030 shots faced.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
“Come on the road, got three out of four,”\u00a0Colangelo said. “Three games in four nights, happy to get three out of four, but\u00a0ultimately got\u00a0to close out that game headed into the third with the lead on the road. We\u00a0kind of let\u00a0them back into it, and\u00a0credit to\u00a0us, credit to [Nikolas Brouillard] for getting that one to get us back in it.\u00a0Ultimately\u00a0not satisfied with three. We wanted four.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
It\u2019s\u00a0getting close to the end of the regular season, meaning every point counts. The Gulls will skate in\u00a010 more games at home and 10 more on the road before the Calder Cup Playoffs begin.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
“The\u00a0schedule\u2019s\u00a0a grind, but this is,\u202ffrom a\u00a0player’s\u00a0perspective, the most fun,”\u00a0McIlvane\u00a0said. “Meaningful games and putting all your focus and effort into the next game.\u00a0The challenge is to learn and grow and turn the page and get ready for that next one.\u00a0We’ll\u00a0get an opportunity to practice, which will be good, and then\u00a0we’ll\u00a0get ready to play against a\u00a0really strong\u00a0San Jose team.”\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n
