March 12 is a date a lot of San Jose Unified School District (SJUSD) families have circled on their calendars, as that’s the day the board could vote on school closures.<\/p>\n
Parents had a lot to say Tuesday night, with many holding signs bearing the names of their schools. <\/p>\n
Some parents said some of the schools in jeopardy meet the district’s own criteria for ideal campuses in terms of size and performance, while others said the decision is rushed. <\/p>\n
But according to the district website, the “Schools of Tomorrow” plan launched two years ago. <\/p>\n
The plan to close or consolidate nine elementary schools is in response to a 20% decline in enrollment since before the pandemic. <\/p>\n
6,000 fewer students mean fewer dollars from the state. SJUSD has 26 schools with fewer than 350 students.<\/p>\n
