(KGET) \u2014 The 2026 Kern County Science Fair was held at the Dignity Health Convention Center as hundreds of local students showcased their projects and passions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI am really excited about having all the students come out today after spending so much time working on their projects,\u201d said Michelle Roy, the Science Coordinator for the Kern County Superintendent of Schools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">More than 700 students and 600 projects filled the convention center with buzz and curiosity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.kget.com\/plus\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Watch 17 News, After Sunrise and more local news free on your smart TV. Click to learn more about KGET+ <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cJust excited to share the thing I\u2019ve been so passionate about for so long now, I love seeing all the projects and it\u2019s really great to see Bakersfield show out,\u201d said Eric Nahama, a high school student.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Winners from each category at the middle school and high school level will earn a spot in state competition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI\u2019m hoping to win and if I don\u2019t win that\u2019s fine I can always just try next time,\u201d said Ariel Robles, a student form Del Vista Math &amp; Science Academy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A similar sentiment across the floor with most students happy to be able to share their work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI\u2019m just excited to be here, I feel like this is a great opportunity for my school and for my district, that they\u2019ve chosen to send me here,\u201d said Jahari O\u2019Neal, a McKee Middle School 8th grader.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As for the topics of each poster, they varied just a little bit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI redesigned a more efficient and effective helical tube heat exchanger in a dilution refrigerator,\u201d said Nahama.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But maybe helical tubes and dilution refrigerators aren\u2019t really your thing? Projects touched on many topics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.kget.com\/national-news\/new-materials-old-physics-the-science-behind-how-your-winter-jacket-keeps-you-warm\/?ipid=promo-link-block1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:New materials, old physics \u2013 the science behind how your winter jacket keeps you\u00a0warm;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"> New materials, old physics \u2013 the science behind how your winter jacket keeps you\u00a0warm <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI play golf and I wanted to do a project on tee height, so my project is called \u2018What\u2019s the Tee?\u2019\u201d said Elanor Bazemore, a Highgate Elementary Student.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">No matter the scale, each project taught students important aspects of experimentation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cScience can be such a trial and error issue, in that not all experiments need to work to be valid science,\u201d said Madelyn Evans, a Ridgeview High School student.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Voting is being finalized by a group of more than 200 volunteer judges<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc.
