{"id":205730,"date":"2026-03-05T15:27:06","date_gmt":"2026-03-05T15:27:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/205730\/"},"modified":"2026-03-05T15:27:06","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T15:27:06","slug":"friends-mourn-loss-of-man-killed-in-brutal-potrero-hill-shooting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/205730\/","title":{"rendered":"Friends mourn loss of man killed in brutal Potrero Hill shooting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On an unseasonably warm Friday morning, <a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2026\/02\/s-f-shooting-leaves-one-dead-two-wounded-in-potrero-hill\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">multiple bullets were fired<\/a> into the backseat window of a white sedan parked near Potrero Terrace and Annex, one of the last public housing complexes in San Francisco.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Police said one victim \u2014 whom friends and a police source identified as Cornelius Wigfall, Jr., 44, known familiarly as \u201cSaga\u201d \u2014 was killed instantly. An unidentified woman who was also in the car was critically injured, though she is expected to recover from her gunshot wounds, Supervisor Shamann Walton, who represents the area, told Mission Local.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A 12-year-old boy was also wounded in the attack, though he was not shot, police wrote in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>San Francisco had a <a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2025\/10\/trump-sf-went-wrong-crime-data-down\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">record-low total<\/a> of 28 homicides in 2025 \u2014 the lowest number the city has recorded in 70 years. But 2026 has gotten off to a rough start: Entering the third month of the year, there have been eight homicides citywide, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sanfranciscopolice.org\/stay-safe\/crime-data\/crime-dashboard\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to police data<\/a>, compared to just one homicide at this time last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Soon after the Feb. 27 shooting, commenters flooded social media mourning the death of Wigfall, whose identity was confirmed by a police department source, though his name has not yet been publicly shared or released by the medical examiner\u2019s office.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A close friend of Wigfall said that he left behind four children, and was also a grandfather.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was a wonderful father, wonderful husband, a wonderful friend,\u201d said the friend, who went by \u201cT.\u201d \u201cHe deeply wanted to get out of his environment and do better for himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wigfall had been arrested in 2020 and booked for \u201cstreet terrorism,\u201d a term referring to violent, coordinated crimes often conducted by gangs. He was arrested over a dozen times in multiple California counties throughout the last decade for robbery, grand theft and possession of a controlled substance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Monty Bo became close with Wigfall at San Quentin State Prison, where they were both incarcerated in the mid-2000s. Wigfall\u2019s father, he said, was also in prison at the time. \u201cHe was funny, strong willed and, if afforded the opportunity, he wanted to be better,\u201d said Bo of Cornelius Jr.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Wigfall is a native of Potrero Hill, though a city official noted that at the time of his death, he did not live at the housing complex nor in San Francisco. He was likely visiting family on Friday morning. Commenters and friends who posted on Instagram described Wigfall as a \u201cPotrero Legend.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There has been a significant drop in gun-related violence in District 10 in the past several years. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2021\/03\/a-dozen-groups-responsible-for-a-majority-of-sf-homicides-in-3-5-years\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a study released by the police commission<\/a> in 2021, the vast majority of gun-related incidents in San Francisco since 2018 were conducted by roughly a dozen small \u201cgroups.\u201d In District 10, these groups are often isolated to the district\u2019s remaining public housing complexes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over the past decade, District 10\u2019s public housing complexes have been rebuilt as part of HOPE SF\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2025\/08\/mayor-lurie-makes-marathon-visits-to-s-f-low-income-housing-but-what-can-he-do\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">revitalization program<\/a>, which aimed to modernize, and privatize the neighborhood\u2019s projects, many of which were dilapidated, former Navy barrack housing.
