{"id":206064,"date":"2026-03-05T19:49:36","date_gmt":"2026-03-05T19:49:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/206064\/"},"modified":"2026-03-05T19:49:36","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T19:49:36","slug":"airbnb-settles-120m-lawsuit-vs-san-francisco-will-receive-0","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/206064\/","title":{"rendered":"Airbnb settles $120M lawsuit vs. San Francisco \u2014 will receive $0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Airbnb <a href=\"https:\/\/sfgov.legistar.com\/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=7936746&amp;GUID=221B5E7E-456B-4B25-8BD9-EEBC519B1BE5&amp;Options=ID%7CText%7C&amp;Search=settlement\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">is settling<\/a> its $120 million lawsuit against the city of San Francisco for $0, bringing an end to a contentious tax dispute that has drawn criticism from the city\u2019s labor unions and elected officials.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit, filed on Feb. 23, 2024, sought to recover roughly $120 million in allegedly overpaid business taxes that the company claimed were incorrectly calculated by the city for the tax years from 2019 to 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are pleased to have reached an agreement that, above all, protects the public\u2019s money,\u201d City Attorney David Chiu said in a statement. \u201cOur office works tirelessly to defend San Francisco\u2019s tax laws and ensure all taxpayers pay their fair share. This settlement achieves both goals while putting this dispute behind us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The settlement may help the city\u2019s large <a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2025\/12\/sf-budget-cuts-mayor-daniel-lurie\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deficit<\/a>. The $120 million that Airbnb claimed to have overpaid in taxes was being held by the city\u2019s litigation reserve, which keeps money that the city may have to pay out for lawsuits.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More information about the financial implications of the settlement will be shared by the city in March during a five-year financial forecast from the controller\u2019s office, the mayor\u2019s office and the Board of Supervisors\u2019 Budget and Legislative Analyst.<\/p>\n<p>The $120 million sum was an unusually large amount for a tax dispute lawsuit \u2014 other settlements that the city has made recently include <a href=\"https:\/\/sfgov.legistar.com\/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=7865834&amp;GUID=D62C3D0D-B5E2-45F3-8E47-0D6E5CB4BC91&amp;Options=ID%7CText%7C&amp;Search=telephone\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$2.2 million<\/a> to the Pacific Bell Telephone company and <a href=\"https:\/\/sfgov.legistar.com\/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=7126680&amp;GUID=9E06A1B9-E085-4313-B19A-5C72461BAAD0&amp;Options=&amp;Search=#:~:text=Details,for%20the%202024%20tax%20year.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$1.6 million to Coinbase<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, San Francisco labor unions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kqed.org\/news\/12059158\/sf-unions-call-for-boycott-of-airbnb-as-it-tries-to-claw-back-120-million-in-taxes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">called for a boycott<\/a> of Airbnb over the lawsuit. They <a href=\"https:\/\/ifpte21.org\/2025\/10\/08\/in-the-news-unions-call-for-boycott-of-airbnb-as-company-pursues-120m-lawsuit-against-the-city\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">staged rallies<\/a> last October outside of the short-term rental company\u2019s headquarters in SoMa to pressure the company to drop the lawsuit.
