Thus, it is no surprise that in their publishing debuts, San Francisco serves as both a setting and a character. Pe\u00f1a-Govea\u2019s book, \u201cEstela, Undrowning\u201d follows the novel\u2019s namesake as she navigates the pressures of an elite public high school, college admissions, and her family\u2019s pending eviction. And in \u201cLies We Tell About the Stars,\u201d Nadler tells the story of a young woman living in the aftermath of a major earthquake and the loss of her best friend.
