NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) – Vanderbilt University Chancellor Dr. David Diermeier revealed details about the university\u2019s expansion to three major cities outside Tennessee during an interview at the new West End Tower.<\/p>\n

The Gothic-style building, completed in 2021 where the 55-year-old Carmichael Towers dormitories once stood, served as the backdrop for Diermeier\u2019s discussion of the history-making moves.<\/p>\n

New York campus opens this fall<\/p>\n

The New York City campus opens this fall after what Diermeier described as an unexpected opportunity.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd it started with a phone call from an alumna who said that there was this opportunity there for this beautiful campus. It looks like you take it straight from the Nashville campus and teleport it to New York, to Chelsea,\u201d Diermeier said. \u201cAnd it was an opportunity that basically presented itself. And then we very quickly acted on it.\u201d<\/p>\n

California expansion set for 2027<\/p>\n

In San Francisco, Vanderbilt will take over the existing California College of the Arts. The campus opens in 2027 with a focus on technology, engineering, design and entrepreneurship, serving about 1,000 students.<\/p>\n

\"WSMV<\/a>West Palm Beach graduate school in planning<\/p>\n

The West Palm Beach location will feature a graduate school built from scratch. The campus is still in the design and planning stages.<\/p>\n

\u201cSouth Florida is a fast-growing business community, particularly in the area of finance and technology, so we are excited about being part of that community as well,\u201d Diermeier said.<\/p>\n

Shift from liberal arts to engineering model<\/p>\n

Diermeier said Vanderbilt\u2019s rising reputation and competition with Ivy League schools has required a priority shift from being a liberal arts school to following an engineering model.<\/p>\n

Seventy-eight percent of Vanderbilt students double major with a science, math, engineering or computer science degree, then add a creative, liberal arts major, according to Diermeier.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo the next generation of leaders can be successful in this world. That is front and center for us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The school\u2019s growing endowment and donor support will pay for the new campuses, Diermeier said.<\/p>\n
