SAN FRANCISCO — Officers assigned to San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie’s security detail fought off two suspects in the city’s Tenderloin neighborhood on Thursday evening, police said.<\/p>\n

The mayor wasn’t involved in the scuffle, which happened about 5:40 p.m. near Cedar and Polk streets, authorities said.<\/p>\n

“The officers were in a physical altercation with two unknown male subjects and requested back up,” San Francisco police said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Authorities haven’t said what led to the altercation, or if the suspects were threatening to harm the mayor. Both men were arrested, police said. Their names weren’t released.<\/p>\n

Two officers on the mayor’s detail suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were assessed at the scene by paramedics, according to police.<\/p>\n

The San Francisco Police Officers Association released a statement saying that the mayor wasn’t injured.<\/p>\n

“We are grateful that the officers assigned to the mayor’s security detail acted swiftly and courageously to protect him in a dangerous and unpredictable situation,” the union said.<\/p>\n

In a brief statement Thursday night, Lurie’s office didn’t address questions about what happened.<\/p>\n

“There was an altercation this evening involving the mayor’s security detail,” the mayor’s press secretary Charles Lutvak said. “The mayor was not involved. We appreciate our SFPD officers for their quick response and for keeping our city safe every day.”<\/p>\n
