SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — President Donald Trump on Thursday fired Kristi Noem as Department of Homeland Security secretary<\/a>. Noem will continue as DHS chief until the end of the month.<\/p>\n

After the announcement, she spoke at a police conference and made some surprising statements about San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie.<\/p>\n

“You’ve got a mayor that works with us very well,” Noem said. “He probably doesn’t want me to talk about it much actually- but he has been cooperative and we have great conversations and talk quit often.<\/p>\n

Noem did not provide details about San Francisco’s cooperation with federal law enforcement.<\/p>\n

Mayor Lurie’s office had no comment on Noem’s remarks.<\/p>\n

Back in October, Lurie was able to convince Trump to abort planned immigration raids in the Bay Area<\/a>.<\/p>\n

ABC7 Insider Phil Matier weighed in on the mayor’s balancing act with the White House.<\/p>\n

“Lurie has done a great job of going between the two, but he’s also been lucky because nobody really criticized him when he did make the call and was ‘nice’ to the president, Matier said.<\/p>\n

President Trump says he will nominate Oklahoma Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin to take Noem’s place.<\/p>\n

He needs to be confirmed by the Senate.<\/p>\n
