Daryl Hannah is no fan of FX\u2019s \u201cLove Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette.\u201d<\/a> She made that abundantly clear in an op-ed for the New York Times that also criticized the series for what she claims is a misogynistic portrayal of her younger self. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s appalling to me that I even have to defend myself against a television show,\u201d Hannah, 65, wrote in the op-ed published Friday. \u201cThese are not creative embellishments of personality. They are assertions about conduct \u2014 and they are false.\u201d<\/p>\n

A representative for FX did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday. <\/p>\n

\u201cSplash\u201d and \u201cKill Bill\u201d star Hannah, whose romance with Kennedy in the 1990s made for tabloid fodder before his marriage to Bessette, wrote that the Ryan Murphy-produced project depicted her as \u201cirritating, self-absorbed, whiny and inappropriate.\u201d She wrote that the show also depicted her as a cocaine-loving, selfish obstacle in the way of the series\u2019 late lovers. Kennedy and Bessette Kennedy died in a plane crash in 1999. <\/p>\n

These creative choices, she claimed, were \u201cno accident.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hannah decried her story being used as a \u201cnarrative device\u201d to drive tension in the series and as a result, the series fell into \u201ctextbook misogyny\u201d by pitting two women \u2014 in this case, actor Dree Hemingway\u2019s Daryl Hannah and Sarah Pidgeon\u2019s Carolyn Bessette \u2014 against each other. <\/p>\n

The actor, also a filmmaker and advocate for environmental and senior health causes, also distanced herself from the series\u2019 \u201cuntrue\u201d depictions of her life, behavior, actions and relationship with Kennedy. <\/p>\n

\u201cI have never desecrated any family heirloom or intruded upon anyone\u2019s private memorial,\u201d she wrote. \u201cI have never planted any story in the press. I never compared Jacqueline Onassis\u2019 death to a dog\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLove Story,\u201d created by Connor Hines, premiered in February with Paul Anthony Kelly starring as Kennedy. Hannah wrote that since the show\u2019s debut, she received many \u201chostile and even threatening\u201d messages from viewers who believe the series\u2019 depictions. <\/p>\n

Before Hannah\u2019s op-ed, Murphy received criticism<\/a> from Jack Schlossberg, the grandson of John F. Kennedy and nephew of John F. Kennedy Jr. In an interview with \u201cCBS News Sunday Morning,\u201d the 33-year-old political commentator said Murphy \u201cknows nothing\u201d about his family and that the prolific TV creator is making a \u201cton of money on a grotesque display of someone else\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n

While she has often chosen not to address \u201coutrageous lies, crappy stories and unflattering characterizations,\u201d Hannah wrote her \u201csilence should not be mistaken for agreement with lies.\u201d She said she felt compelled to speak out against the series\u2019 depiction of her because continuing her \u201cgood work,\u201d including her philanthropic efforts, \u201crequires an intact reputation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hannah said she has respected the Kennedy family\u2019s privacy and, like Schlossberg, condemned \u201cself-serving sensationalists trading in gossip, innuendo and speculation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a digital era, entertainment often becomes collective memory,\u201d she wrote. \u201cReal names are not fictional tools. They belong to real lives.\u201d<\/p>\n
