But as she lit firecrackers at the Union Square television broadcast zone to officially kick off the parade, <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2026\/03\/06\/social-media-eileen-gu-s-traitor-chinatown-ll-welcomed-as-daughter\/\" data-post-id=\"225a4aaf-c88a-4cad-a125-93ef89f9b0b2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">she was simply a daughter of San Francisco\u2019s Chinese community<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body text-left\">\u201cGrowing up in San Francisco, this was a huge part of my childhood, and I remember going every year,\u201d Gu said in a statement ahead of the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing part of the Asian community in San Francisco and coming back to my roots is something I\u2019m so much looking forward to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body text-left\">Gu is now attending Stanford University while pursuing a career in modeling and fashion. She was <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2026\/01\/21\/eileen-gu-chinese-new-year-parade-grand-marshal\/\" data-post-id=\"f94a4b6c-533f-4292-b196-50e5df66f45d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">named the parade\u2019s grand marshal<\/a> ahead of the Olympics, where she earned one gold and two silver medals. Combined with her medals from the 2022 Beijing Games, Gu is now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7063380\/2026\/02\/22\/eileen-gu-olympics-gold-womens-freeski-halfpipe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">the most decorated freestyle skier (opens in new tab)<\/a> in history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body text-left\">The parade is a long-standing tradition in Chinatown, spanning roughly 1.5 miles from downtown to Chinatown. It is considered the largest nighttime parade in the United States and the biggest Lunar New Year celebration outside of Asia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body text-left\">2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse, with the theme \u201cHorse Leads to Success(\u9a6c\u5230\u6210\u529f).\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body text-left\">Parade director Tong Lau said organizers were expecting record attendance at this weekend\u2019s festivities, with around 800,000 to 1 million people. \u201cAll the tickets are already sold out,\u201d Lau told The Standard in Cantonese.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body text-left\">More than 100 groups marched in the parade, including corporations, nonprofits, schools, community organizations, and politicians. There were 17 floats, with the largest one sponsored by Alaska Airlines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body text-left\">In recent years, the parade has featured mostly Hollywood celebrities with Asian heritage as grand marshals, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfexaminer.com\/news\/film-star-michelle-yeoh-grand-marshal-of-sf-chinese-new-year-parade\/article_5ad54794-9941-5b30-9ffc-e160a83444b7.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Michelle Yeoh (opens in new tab)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/02\/15\/chinese-new-year-parade-2025-joan-chen\/\" data-post-id=\"108889b7-2a84-44aa-af00-b09ddad0ec54\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Joan Chen<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2024\/02\/24\/chinese-new-year-parade-san-francisco-awkwafina\/\" data-post-id=\"e64a8261-a694-4cb1-8307-b4ad038e5916\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Awkwafina<\/a>, Daniel Wu, and Rich Ting.
