But year after year, another problem persists. According to students, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/admission\/undergraduate\/student-life\/housing.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chapman University housing<\/a> has widespread mold issues \u2014 but the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/housing\/meet-the-staff.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Residence Life and First-Year Experience Office<\/a> (RLFYE) staff beg to differ.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cI want to say that the majority of people in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/housing\/housing-communities\/henley-hall.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Henley (Hall)<\/a> have had to deal with mold,\u201d said freshman computer science major Thien Scofield, who claims to have found mold in his air conditioning unit. \u201cIt would smell really weird when we turned it on, and we thought it was broken, but it was just mold.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/housing\/meet-the-staff.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Juan Tinoco<\/a>, assistant dean of students for RLFYE, said that extensive precautionary measures and response protocols have lessened staff\u2019s concerns regarding microbial growth or mold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cThere have been no widespread systemic mold issues in the residence halls,\u201d Tinoco said. \u201cReports about microbial growth are a very small percentage of all the work orders that we receive, but we take all concerns very seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Tinoco added that many mold reports turn out to be false alarms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cSometimes what students think is mold is actually another issue,\u201d Tinoco said. \u201cMore likely than not, there is moisture with dirt that\u2019s on top of their AC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Chapman Facilities<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/campus-services\/facilities-management\/index.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Management<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/campus-services\/facilities-management\/services\/work-requests\/index.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aramark Custodial Services<\/a>, Chapman\u2019s janitorial vendor, are on call for any issues in residence halls. Students must submit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/campus-services\/facilities-management\/services\/work-requests\/index.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">work requests<\/a> to call attention to these concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cThe first thing we do when we have a (mold report) is to have eyes on it,\u201d Tinoco said. \u201cWe have trained facility folks who have tools to check moisture. If needed, we may ask the student if they\u2019re okay with relocating before bringing in a professional vendor for a deeper investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">However, not all students who complain of mold incidents submit work requests.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Scofield said he and his roommates dealt with the mold on their own, cleaning and sanitizing the AC unit whenever it occurred.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The reported problem extends beyond freshman dorms into continuing housing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/housing\/housing-communities\/chapman-grand.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">(Chapman) Grand<\/a> by far has had the most mold,\u201d said senior business administration major Haley Geary. \u201cIt is in the crevices of the bathroom and near my front door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Geary has lived in on-campus housing all four years at Chapman and has had two mold issues: her freshman year in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/housing\/housing-communities\/sandhu.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sandhu Residence Center<\/a> and her senior year in Chapman Grand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cAt Sandhu, they had a specialist who came and cleaned all the vents,\u201d said Geary. \u201cFor Grand, the mold was present before I even started living in the apartment. I just got mold and mildew cleaning supplies and deep cleaned everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Even though she had those experiences, she still chose to live on campus because she found it easier and cheaper than renting a house.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">While Geary and Scofield have had issues with mold, that&#8217;s not the case for all students. Resident Advisors (RAs) Isabelle Killough, who is in her second year as an RA, and Oly Chen, who is in their first year as an RA, have not had to deal with mold, but they have heard some horror stories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Killough, the lead RA in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/housing\/housing-communities\/morlan-hall.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Morlan Hall<\/a>, said that sometimes students aren&#8217;t super proactive about cleaning, which can lead to microbial growth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Similarly, Tinoco urged students not to place furniture and other items directly in front of their AC vents to prevent moisture buildup, and to utilize the work request system if problems arise.
