{"id":211782,"date":"2026-03-09T16:37:07","date_gmt":"2026-03-09T16:37:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/211782\/"},"modified":"2026-03-09T16:37:07","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T16:37:07","slug":"oc-insider-headline-makers-orange-county-business-journal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/211782\/","title":{"rendered":"OC Insider: Headline Makers &#8211; Orange County Business Journal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A recent feature in the Wall Street Journal says that \u201cAmerica\u2019s \u2018Most Luxurious Ski Town\u2019 is Tearing Itself Apart.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And much of the news surrounding the troubles in that town \u2013 Telluride, Colo. \u2013 is taking place in Newport Beach.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the home office of Chuck Horning, head of commercial real estate investor Newport Federal. While news involving Horning has been scarce in OC the past 20 or so years, he\u2019s made a name for himself at the ski resort.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Horning, \u201cwho skied in jeans, buys his shirts at Costco and cuts his own hair,\u201d paid a reported $45 million to take control of the Telluride Ski &amp; Golf resort in 2003.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, the WSJ reported, \u201cHorning\u2019s unconventional style alienated some,\u201d with a lack of investment in the resort, and a string of poor personnel decisions among grievances locals cited in the story.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChuck is a real-estate investor, you know, so he tries to spend the least amount of money,\u201d quipped one Telluride business owner and critic of Horning in the story, where locals bemoaned their town lagging behind rivals like Vail and Jackson Hole.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Horning refuted the accusations in the WSJ report, saying that he saved the resort from going bankrupt when he bought it, and that he has invested heavily into the property in the following years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A $127 million bid to buy 51% of the resort, led by area elected officials on behalf of other investors, was recently rebuffed by Horning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m never selling,\u201d Horning, 82, told the WSJ.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Any follower of Palmer Luckey\u2019s social media feeds knows the 33-year-old behind Oculus, Anduril Industries, and, most recently, Erebor Bank, doesn\u2019t shy away from online arguments.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the past few weeks, Luckey has taken on Sen. Elizabeth Warren after she called the Lido Island resident a \u2018Silicon Valley billionaire,\u2019 a label he rejected, along with other critiques she aimed at Erebor. Prior sparring partners have included Mark Cuban\u00a0and foreign leaders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>No surprise then that Luckey\u2019s spent some time honing his debating skills; that\u2019s one factoid mentioned in a New York Times feature last week \u2013 \u201cThe Pentagon\u2019s Favorite Tech Guy Is This Hawaiian Shirt-Wearing Founder.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The NYT noted in the feature that the home-schooled Luckey met his longtime girlfriend, and now wife, Nicole, at a debate camp when he was 15.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The story also credits Luckey with pushing the Department of Defense to change its name to the Department of War.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Read more about Luckey\u2019s Hawaiian shirts, cargo shorts and Anduril\u2019s latest raise in Kevin Costelloe\u2019s Front Page story.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe America Needs Some New Cities,\u201d headlined a February feature in the New York Times, which noted that it might sound \u201ca bit kooky to promise a whole city from scratch.
