A 26-year-old man from Tijuana, Mexico is in custody after Customs and Border Protection officers\u00a0found\u00a0nearly 1,000\u00a0pounds of liquid methamphetamine\u00a0hidden inside\u00a0the fuel tank of the tractor\u00a0trailer\u00a0he was\u00a0attempting\u00a0to drive into the United States.<\/p>\n

Officials with the U.S. Department of Justice said in a\u00a0news release<\/a>\u00a0that the March\u00a02 discovery happened just before 11:30 a.m. at the Otay Mesa\u00a0Import\u00a0Cargo Facility,\u00a0a border crossing approximately 22 miles south of San Diego.<\/p>\n

Oscar Alonzo Cesena Camacho was traveling on a business visa when he pulled into the facility behind the wheel of a 2019 Kenworth tractor trailer, officials said.<\/p>\n

During an inspection of the vehicle, a CBP officer spotted a white crystalline substance on top of the passenger-side fuel tank.<\/p>\n

\u201cFurther inspection of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of 29 buckets-worth of liquid concealed in the passenger-side fuel tank of the vehicle, with a total approximate weight of 944.4 pounds,\u201d\u00a0the U.S. Attorney\u2019s office\u00a0said. \u201cA sample of the substance contained within the fuel tank tested positive for the characteristics of methamphetamine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cesena Camacho was taken into custody and appeared in court on March 3, where Magistrate Judge Jill L. Burkhardt\u00a0deemed\u00a0the 26-year-old\u00a0a flight risk and ordered that he be held without bail.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s\u00a0facing a maximum sentence of life in prison, with a mandatory\u00a0minimum\u00a0sentence of 10 years and a $10 million fine\u00a0and is due to appear in court again on March 17.<\/p>\n
