FRESNO, Calif. — A Fresno High School student died Monday after collapsing during a physical education class, according to a spokesperson for Fresno Unified School District.<\/p>\n
District officials said first responders were called to the campus around lunchtime after the student collapsed.<\/p>\n
The student was taken to a hospital, where they later died.<\/p>\n
Students on campus said they were stunned by the emergency and devastated to learn their classmate did not survive.<\/p>\n
One student described seeing emergency crews arrive shortly after the medical call was made.<\/p>\n
“I am going to think about it a lot ’cause it could happen to anyone else,” said Giovanni, a Fresno High junior.<\/p>\n
It remains unclear what the student was doing at the time of the collapse.<\/p>\n
One classmate said they believed it may have occurred during a P.E. drill or test, but Fresno Unified has not confirmed that detail.<\/p>\n
In a statement, the district said, “Our hearts are with the student’s family, friends, and school community during this incredibly difficult time.”<\/p>\n
Neighbors also expressed shock at the news and said their hearts went out to the family grieving the loss of their child.<\/p>\n
No additional information has been released by the district.<\/p>\n
