{"id":215936,"date":"2026-03-12T04:02:26","date_gmt":"2026-03-12T04:02:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/215936\/"},"modified":"2026-03-12T04:02:26","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T04:02:26","slug":"fbi-raises-reward-to-1-million-for-fugitive-california-murder-suspect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/215936\/","title":{"rendered":"FBI raises reward to $1 million for fugitive California murder suspect"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A $1-million reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of a man suspected in a 2019 fatal shooting in Sylmar, who also is considered one of the FBI\u2019s \u201cTen Most Wanted\u201d fugitives.<\/p>\n<p>Omar Alexander Cardenas <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/wanted\/topten\/omar-alexander-cardenas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">has been charged<\/a> with the murder of <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/homicide.latimes.com\/post\/jabali-lavell-dumas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jabali Dumas<\/a> in a barbershop on Aug. 15, 2019. Investigators believe Cardenas fired several rounds from a handgun, hitting Dumas in the head. <\/p>\n<p>Surveillance video posted on the FBI\u2019s website shows Cardenas outside the shop before and after the deadly shooting. A search warrant at his house led police to recover the car used in the shooting, as well as other evidence linking Cardenas to the crime, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said at a news conference Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p>Authorities believe Cardenas fled to Mexico shortly after the shooting to avoid arrest. <\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"A photo of a man with dark brown hair and brown beard and mustache, in an orange shirt\"   width=\"1200\" height=\"1690\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1773288146_288_.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>This undated photo released by the FBI shows Omar Alexander Cardenas, who is accused of killing a man in a Sylmar barbershop in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>(FBI \/ Associated Press)<\/p>\n<p>The Los Angeles Police Department sought an arrest warrant for Cardenas in April 2020, and he was <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/news\/stories\/omar-cardenas-added-to-ten-most-wanted-fugitives-list-072022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">added to the FBI\u2019s \u201cTen Most Wanted\u201d list<\/a> in July 2022. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cLAPD detectives have continued to work this case, along with the FBI Fugitive Task Force,\u201d McDonnell said. \u201cSomeone knows Omar Cardenas\u2019 whereabouts and we\u2019re encouraging anyone with information to please come forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The FBI initially offered a $100,000 reward for Cardenas. In 2022, the reward was increased to $250,000.<\/p>\n<p>McDonnell said the hope is that increasing the reward once again, to $1 million, would be a \u201ccritical step\u201d toward bringing him into custody. <\/p>\n<p>Investigators believe Dumas knew Cardenas, said Akil Davis, assistant director in charge of the FBI\u2019s Los Angeles field office. <\/p>\n<p>Cardenas was the 528th suspect added to the bureau\u2019s \u201cMost Wanted\u201d list, Davis said. <\/p>\n<p>The suspect was described by the FBI as being about 5 feet 7 and weighing between 240 and 300 pounds.
