FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) \u2014 The Fresno Unified School Board approved another step Wednesday night in its effort to reduce staffing as the district works to close a growing budget deficit.<\/p>\n

Trustees voted to approve a resolution eliminating 49 classified positions across the district.<\/p>\n

District leaders say no current employees will lose their jobs as a result of this specific action because the positions are already vacant or being eliminated through retirements and other staffing changes.<\/p>\n

Fresno Unified’s School Board is moving forward with another step in its effort to cut jobs. (FOX26)<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThe last point I want to make on this specific resolution on the classified employees is we’re glad to say that although there are 49 positions that show up on here, there isn’t a single individual being impacted,\u201d said David Chavez, Fresno Unified\u2019s chief of human resources. \u201cThere were retirements, vacancies or other moves that are already happening.\u201d<\/p>\n

The vote comes after the board approved sending out 274 preliminary layoff notices last month as the district faces a $77 million budget deficit, with another $59 million projected next year.<\/p>\n

District leaders say the final number of layoffs could be closer to 200. However, state law requires preliminary notices to be sent by March 15.<\/p>\n
