A 34-year-old man with a previous felony conviction pleaded guilty Thursday and was sentenced to 22 years in prison for the gang-related fatal shooting of a 20-year-old man near the entrance of an Anaheim hotel 5 1/2 years ago.

Richard Perez Arteaga pleaded guilty to murder, possession of a gun by a felon, participating in gang activity and assault with a semiautomatic firearm. He admitted a sentencing enhancement for gang activity and discharge of a gun causing death.

Co-defendant Danny Rey Quintana, 29, was sentenced March 6 to 11 years in prison, or time already served, for his part in the killing. He pleaded guilty Jan. 22 to participating in gang activity and assault with a deadly weapon with a sentencing enhancement for gang activity. As part of the plea deal, a count of murder with a special-circumstances allegation of gang activity was dismissed.

Orange County Superior Court Judge Gary Paer sentenced Arteaga to 50 years to life in prison, but stayed that in lieu of the 22 years.

The two were convicted in the Sept. 5, 2020, killing of 20-year-old Rodolfo Alfredo Miranda of Anaheim.

Miranda was fatally shot about 1:30 p.m. at the Candlewood Suites at 1733 S. Anaheim Blvd., between Disney Way and Katella Avenue, police said.

The two defendants have a record of gang-related crimes.

Quintana pleaded guilty in April 2019 to assault with a firearm with sentencing enhancements for gang activity and the personal use of a gun. He also pleaded guilty to misdemeanor counts of criminal threats, exhibiting a gun at a day care center and vandalism, according to court records.
