{"id":217868,"date":"2026-03-13T08:31:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-13T08:31:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/217868\/"},"modified":"2026-03-13T08:31:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-13T08:31:09","slug":"8-universities-from-midwest-will-move-into-shared-startup-space-in-san-francisco-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/217868\/","title":{"rendered":"8 universities from Midwest will move into shared startup space in San Francisco"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">EIGHT UNIVERSITIES based in the Midwest will open a shared workspace in San Francisco this month to foster relationships in technology and venture capital.<\/p>\n<p>The Third Coast Foundry will be located at 625 Second St., near Oracle Park in the South Park neighborhood. It will operate as a base for the universities to connect with venture capital, tap into the region\u2019s innovation in artificial intelligence technology and accelerate innovation, according to a news release from Mayor Daniel Lurie\u2019s office on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Three of the universities are based in Illinois: Northwestern University, University of Chicago, and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.<\/p>\n<p>The others that will move into the space \u201cimmediately\u201d ahead of a grand opening ceremony this summer are: Carnegie Mellon University, based in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania; Washington University in St. Louis; University of Wisconsin-Madison; The Ohio State University, and Indiana-based Purdue University.<\/p>\n<p>The 3,500-square-foot building will be a base for university-based startups and their teams traveling to and throughout the region to hold demos, seminars, and educational programs, conduct meetings, and make business connections, according to the mayor\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSan Francisco is the global hub of innovation, technology, and venture capital,\u201d Lurie said in a statement. \u201cAnd with yet another investment from leading institutions of higher education, we are accelerating our city\u2019s recovery and strengthening our city center as a place where people live, work, play, and learn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The news comes months after Vanderbilt University said it would <a id=\"https:\/\/localnewsmatters.org\/2026\/01\/14\/vanderbilt-university-san-francisco-campus-showplace-square\/\" href=\"https:\/\/localnewsmatters.org\/2026\/01\/14\/vanderbilt-university-san-francisco-campus-showplace-square\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" type=\"link\" target=\"_blank\">move into the campus of the California College of the Arts<\/a> in San Francisco\u2019s Design District ahead of the 2027-28 academic year.<\/p>\n<p>View this post on Instagram<\/p>\n<p>Supervisor Matt Dorsey said the Third Coast Foundry would be a place where students and others could collaborate on new projects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese world-class institutions are an incredible addition to our thriving Second Street corridor, and I look forward to strengthening our connections and being a partner with them,\u201d Dorsey said.<\/p>\n<p>Each university will contribute to the educational programming.
