OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. \u2013 A paramedic and a patient are safe after a stolen ambulance caught fire following a chase and crash in Oakland County.<\/p>\n
At about 3:25 p.m. Friday, police said a MedStar paramedic crew was treating multiple patients at a motor vehicle crash in Novi when a person involved in the accident entered one of the ambulances and drove away with a paramedic and a patient inside.<\/p>\n
Officials said MedStar tracked the ambulance throughout the incident and communicated its location to law enforcement.<\/p>\n
Police said the ambulance traveled several miles before crashing into another vehicle at 8 Mile Road and Beck Road in Northville Township, causing the ambulance to catch fire as liquid spilled on the ground.<\/p>\n
The paramedic, the original patient, the patient in the vehicle struck in the second crash, and the unauthorized driver were all transported to Henry Ford Providence Novi Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.<\/p>\n
Officials said the ambulance was declared a total loss.<\/p>\n
The incident ended around 5:06 p.m. in the 24000 block of Novi Road, where MedStar was called to an accident and placed a victim in the back of an ambulance.<\/p>\n
While this was happening, someone jumped into the ambulance\u2019s front and took off with the paramedic and patient still inside.<\/p>\n
Police arrested the suspect, and the area remains closed for investigation.<\/p>\n
