There\u2019s a new kid on the block in Oakland Park, and it\u2019s bringing some serious sweetness to the scene. FMS Creamery<\/a>, the latest venture from Jason \u201cJay Rok\u201d Smith \u2014 the mastermind behind BMC Smash Burgers<\/a> next door \u2014 is taking dessert to the next level.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Smith tells New Times the idea had been bubbling for a while. \u201cI always had the idea of shakes with the burgers. They just pair well together,\u201d he says. When the barber shop next door to BMC Smash Burgers became available, Smith jumped on the opportunity. \u201cI had told the landlord before that if he had any other units in the area, I wanted to open up an ice cream shop just to go hand in hand. And then that happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

The result is a retro-meets-modern ice cream parlor that feels right at home beside BMC\u2019s griddle-fired energy. The shop sources its scoops from Ice Cream Club up in Palm Beach<\/a> \u2014 think locally made carrot cake, peanut butter fudge, and other classics \u2014 and lets customers go wild with custom creations. \u201c[Ice Cream Club] has over like 140 flavors to choose from,\u201d Smith says, noting that FMS plans to rotate through crowd-pleasers while keeping staples like chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry on deck.<\/p>\n

A Soda-Lovers Dream: Bacon, \u201cPB&J,\u201d and More Wild Flavors<\/p>\n

But the secret sauce here isn\u2019t just the ice cream on its own. It\u2019s the candy and soda lineup that would make Willy Wonka jealous. We\u2019re talking bacon, \u201cPB&J,\u201d \u201cBuffalo Wing,\u201d \u201cChurro,\u201d \u201cBarbie Punch,\u201d \u201cBazooka Bubble Gum, craft root beer, and \u201cBAWLS,\u201d among dozens of fizzy finds. \u201cFMS stands for Floats, Malts, Shakes,\u201d Smith explains. \u201cI got the sodas with the intention of people being able to build a float type of deal, pick a crazy soda, get a scoop of ice cream, and mix different flavors. I thought the float idea would be a good thing besides just shakes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Floats, shakes, malts, and ice cream sandwiches made with cookies from next door keep the menu easy but dangerously tempting. The pricing is refreshingly straightforward: $4 for a single scoop, $7 for a double, $6 for a single in a waffle cone, $9 for a double, $9 for a shake, $10 for a malt, $8 for a float, and $7 for an ice cream sandwich. Bonus points: the waffle cones are made in-house.<\/p>\n

Oakland Park seems to be embracing it. \u201cThe city\u2019s been great. They were super helpful getting us open, too,\u201d Smith says. \u201cThey were excited about having ice cream in the general area. There was no ice cream right here in Oakland Park, and now, here we are.\u201d Consider this your cue to get scooping, y\u2019all.<\/p>\n
