(FOX40.COM) – As Hollywood prepares to roll out the red carpet for the Oscars Sunday night, Northern California is not letting Los Angeles have all the fun. This year, three major films up for awards have close ties to Sacramento.

Marty Supreme, Sinners and One Battle After Another are all looking at several Oscar nominations this year, but they all have something else in common, too — Sacramento.

“So I worked in the locations department for One Battle After Another and my main job was working on a lot of the logistics around filming,” One Battle After Another Location Scout Semons said.

Through this film, Paul Thomas Anderson and Leonardo DiCaprio set the scene — literally — from J Street to Stockton, Arden Arcade and beyond.

“It was kind of unique around this one in that a lot of the features that are shot here, such as, you know, Lady Bird or Sacramento, the movie, shoot here because it’s set in Sacramento,” Semons said. “Whereas One Battle After Another, it’s not set in Sacramento. It doesn’t really have anything to do with Sacramento. They just came to Sacramento because they love the look of it.

Semons, with Sacramento’s Film + Media office, told FOX40 the star-studded, Oscar-nominated film also helped showcase the city’s booming film industry.

“Filmmaking in California, as a whole, has seen a big lull in the last few years and kind of gone into different markets,” Semons said. “But it certainly feels like that, that’s moving back towards California and also to Sacramento.”

Sacramento viewers might have caught a peek of their own community — Elliot’s Natural Foods, a vacant downtown building now dubbed “Westward Bank” or even Torch Club. Sacramento’s Film + Media office said the city offers hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of incentives for studios to bring their films to the community. Semons said this entertainment boom also helps to bring jobs to the area.

“One Battle After Another brought in millions and millions of dollars to the local economy and that’s going to restaurants, hotels, local crew,” Semons said. “So it really does have a significant impact.”

Switching genres a bit, the vampiric horror movie Sinners also racked up a record 16 Oscar nominations. The film’s director is Ryan Coogler, a graduate of Sacramento State.

Plus, Carmichael native and table tennis expert Scott Gordon is credited as a table tennis in Marty Supreme with actor Timothee Chalamet.

So as movie enthusiasts grab their popcorn and silence their cell phones, they may want to keep their eyes peeled as they might see a familiar place or a familiar name. Meanwhile, Semons said his team only hopes to see this local industry continue to grow.

“It’s always really fun getting to kind of see the changes and differences between filming and seeing the final thing,” Semons said. “I’m a Sacramentan and I love Sacramento and so anytime I get to see, Sacramento on the big screen is is really an exciting time.”
