{"id":221662,"date":"2026-03-16T05:27:15","date_gmt":"2026-03-16T05:27:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/221662\/"},"modified":"2026-03-16T05:27:15","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T05:27:15","slug":"sacramento-da-files-to-settle-with-city-in-homeless-encampment-lawsuit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/221662\/","title":{"rendered":"Sacramento DA files to settle with city in homeless encampment lawsuit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">(FOX40.COM) \u2014 Sacramento County District Attorney Thien Ho appears prepared to settle a years-long lawsuit against Sacramento, new documents show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In September 2023, Ho filed the suit against the city, alleging Sacramento\u2019s approach to homeless encampments let the city \u201ccollapse into chaos.\u201d At the time, Ho said city officials had declined his request that they enforce local sidewalk obstruction laws and create formal comping sites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThis is a model for the people to stand up and hold their government accountable,\u201d Ho told the <a href=\"https:\/\/fox40.com\/health-and-fitness\/ap-health\/ap-sacramento-prosecutor-sues-californias-capital-city-over-failure-to-clean-up-homeless-encampments\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Associated Press;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;Associated Press&quot;}\" class=\"link \">Associated Press<\/a> at the time. \u201cAll I\u2019m asking is the city do its job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Now, it appears he\u2019s ready to settle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">On March 11, an attorney with the Sacramento County District Attorney\u2019s Office filed a notice of settlement with Sacramento Superior Court Judge Jill Talley.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The notice notes that the settlement will be conditional, with conditions that have not yet been released.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A spokesperson for the district attorney\u2019s office would not comment on the filing or the terms of the settlement, telling FOX40 only that \u201cthere has not been a final formal settlement reached in this matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">For Sacramento\u2019s side, a spokesperson told FOX40 the city does not comment on pending litigation and directed questions to the district attorney\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The next hearing in the case is set for March 20.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">When the lawsuit was filed, then-Mayor Darrell Steinberg accused Ho of politicizing the issue of homelessness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe city needs real partnership from the region\u2019s leaders, not politics and lawsuits,\u201d Steinberg said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Ho, first elected as the county\u2019s top prosecutor, is now running for Congress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Associated Press contributed to this story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc.
