An overturned semi-truck spilled hundreds of gallons of syrup on a highway in Fontana, Calif., causing a massive traffic jam.

According to CBS Los Angeles, it happened around 11:20 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the 10 Freeway at Citrus Avenue. Officers aren’t sure what caused the incident, but said the syrup began to quickly spread on the highway, causing an inch-thick layer of substance to flow across all westbound lanes.

Due to the syrup, four lanes of the freeway had to be closed so crews from the California Department of Transportation could begin working on the mess. After a failed attempt at using absorbent material to clean it up, they decided to use a water truck to hose down the syrup and vacuum the remains.

Per ABC7 Los Angeles, the resulting traffic backup extended more than five miles east of the incident.

The cleanup took nearly nine hours, causing cars to be diverted from the freeway entirely.

No injuries were reported in the incident and the semi-truck has been towed from the area.
