{"id":225238,"date":"2026-03-18T12:47:06","date_gmt":"2026-03-18T12:47:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/225238\/"},"modified":"2026-03-18T12:47:06","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T12:47:06","slug":"asuc-senate-passes-resolution-calling-for-student-vote-on-divestment-asuc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/225238\/","title":{"rendered":"ASUC Senate passes resolution calling for student vote on divestment | ASUC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">A new ASUC-backed ballot measure will give UC Berkeley students a chance to vote on university divestments from companies producing military weapons technology.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The ballot proposition allows students to vote on whether they want the UC Berkeley Foundation to disclose all current investments in companies that produce surveillance and military weapons technology, withdraw them and commit to not making future investments in such companies.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If a majority of students vote in favor of the proposition, the ASUC president and executive vice president will urge Chancellor Rich Lyons to meet with the UC Berkeley Foundation and present these findings in favor of divestment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201c(This vote) wouldn\u2019t compel the Foundation to immediately take any action,\u201d said ASUC Executive Vice President Isha Chander. \u201cIt\u2019s more of a reflection of a popular vote and value statement from the student body about what they believe on this matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Chander also noted that she hopes adding this proposition to the ballot will help drive up voter turnout and \u201cinspire folks to fill out their ASUC ballots.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to ASUC presidential candidate Abdullah Memon \u2014 who is a current ASUC senator and co-sponsor of the divestment resolution \u2014 two resolutions have previously been passed calling for the ASUC to divest from companies supporting Israel\u2019s genocide in Gaza as part of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement. In September, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/hrbodies\/hrcouncil\/sessions-regular\/session60\/advance-version\/a-hrc-60-crp-3.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">United Nations legal analysis<\/a> found that Israel committed genocide against Palestinians during its war in Gaza.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to Memon, this is the first ASUC resolution that broadly targets divestment across all weapons and surveillance companies rather than those from a particular country.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cIt\u2019s the first domino to pursue more material and tangible divestment through the Berkeley Foundation,\u201d Memon said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Memon also referenced a 2013 ballot measure in which students voted for the UC Berkeley Foundation to divest from fossil fuels as a precedent for the effect he hoped to see from this resolution.
