While reports have suggested that the San Francisco 49ers will eventually move on from veteran wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, the timing of any decision doesn’t seem to be now.

Speaking recently, Adam Schefter explained that although releasing Aiyuk will happen, the 49ers aren’t in a rush to make that move. This is likely to get back at him, but there’s a timing element that’s important, too.

“I know it says they are planning to release him, but I would like to add on that they’re not planning to release him anytime soon,” Schefter said.

According to Schefter, Aiyuk’s contract gives San Francisco flexibility in how it handles the situation. Because there’s little guaranteed money remaining on the deal, the 49ers have the option to keep him on the roster without taking on financial issues.

“They essentially have no guaranteed money left on his contract, so they can hold onto him for the time being,” Schefter added.

Rather than rushing into a release or trade, the team can wait and evaluate its roster situation as the offseason progresses.

For Aiyuk, the uncertainty creates a complicated situation, though it’s one that he created. The ex-star has been a productive part of San Francisco’s offense in recent seasons, but the ending of his time has been an issue.
