The word itself comes from an Old French word, bufet, meaning a bench or sideboard used for displaying dishes of food. Later in the 18th century, Sweden popularized its own buffet tradition, the sm\u00f6rg\u00e5sbord<\/a>, which they introduced to the 1939 World\u2019s Fair in New York. The format soon went full American when the El Rancho Vegas casino debuted the \u201cBuckaroo Buffet\u201d in 1946<\/a> as a way to keep gambling customers fed and spending.<\/p>\n
