(KGET) \u2014 The city of Bakersfield said it will be terminating efforts to rename H Street for Cesar Chavez following new allegations of sexual assault against the labor leader and civil rights activist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">City officials said in a press release Wednesday morning that the city has become aware of allegations regarding Chavez during his time as the president of the United Farmworkers of America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The city had been considering renaming H Street as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/bakersfield-consider-changing-name-h-165528513.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Cesar Chavez Boulevard;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;Cesar Chavez Boulevard&quot;}\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cesar Chavez Boulevard<\/a> with the City Council first discussing the idea in August of 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Under city policy, streets can be renamed after individuals, service organizations or other humanitarian entities that federal or state holidays are observed for. March 31 is Cesar Chavez Day, a federal holiday in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">On Wednesday, the New York Times published a yearslong investigation into sexual abuse allegations raised against Chavez, who is accused of molesting two young girls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">On the same day, civil rights leader and activist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/dolores-huerta-says-cesar-chavez-150547079.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Dolores Huerta;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;Dolores Huerta&quot;}\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dolores Huerta<\/a> \u2014 who co-founded the National Farm Workers Association in Delano with Chavez \u2014 said Chavez sexually assaulted her and fathered two of her children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">One of the women named in the New York Times report said she was speaking out because the city of Bakersfield was considering renaming H Street to Cesar Chavez Boulevard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc.
