Driving the news: The university will remove Chavez\u2019s statue after the New York Times published a report Wednesday detailing several allegations of Chavez sexually assaulting girls and raping fellow UFW co-founder Dolores Huerta.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What he\u2019s saying: \u201cI am deeply saddened and disturbed by the allegations being reported about C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez; this reporting is compounded by the painful statement made by Dolores Huerta this morning,\u201d Jim\u00e9nez-Sandoval wrote in his campus message. \u201cThese profoundly troubling claims about the rape of women and minors call for our full attention and moral reckoning by removing his statue from our campus.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Jim\u00e9nez-Sandoval said Fresno State\u2019s values are grounded in dignity, respect and care for one another.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cOur university is part of the Central Valley, a region directly shaped by the farmworker movement and its enduring impact on labor rights, opportunity and justice,\u201d Jim\u00e9nez-Sandoval wrote. \u201cThe legacy of those struggles continues to shape our identity \u2013 to instill pride and recognize the strides we\u2019ve made towards securing greater dignity across our community.
