(KRON<\/a>) \u2014 On Thursday, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie said that after speaking with President Donald Trump, the commander in chief called off a federal \u201csurge\u201d to the city <\/a>planned for Saturday. While Lurie\u2019s announcement brought relief to San Francisco, it left the question of what was in store for the rest of the Bay Area hanging in the air.<\/p>\n

Now, it appears that whatever planned federal deployment there was for the Bay Area as a whole has also been called off. That\u2019s according to Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee, who said she spoke with law enforcement.<\/p>\n

\u201cI spoke with Alameda County Sheriff Yesenia Sanchez who confirmed through her communications with ICE that Border Patrol operations are cancelled for the greater Bay Area \u2014 which includes Oakland \u2014 at this time,\u201d Mayor Lee said.<\/p>\n

Mayor Lee\u2019s announcement comes as protesters are still gathered outside the entrance to Coast Guard Island in Oakland. The location was the site of a shooting Thursday night when Coast Guard security opened fire on a U-Haul truck<\/a> that was backing up toward them.<\/p>\n

The driver of the U-Haul and a bystander were injured in the shooting. Mayor Lee said she had been briefed on the incident and that Oakland police were assisting.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am aware of last night\u2019s shooting near the entrance of Coast Guard Island in Alameda,\u201d Mayor Lee said. \u201cThe Oakland Police Department is assisting the Alameda Police Department in securing the perimeter of the scene. The FBI is the lead agency investigating the incident, and I will continue to gather available information as it becomes accessible.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Trump spoke publicly on Thursday about calling off the federal deployment to SF after speaking with the billionaire tech CEOs of Salesforce and Nvidia. He also said Mayor Lurie had asked him \u201cnicely\u201d not to send federal forces into the city.<\/p>\n

KRON4\u2019s Dan Kerman reports that a group of California Highway Patrol Officers in riot gear arrived to meet a small group of peaceful protesters still standing outside the entrance to Coast Guard Island Friday evening. CHP officers were seen chatting with the protesters before the agency left the area without issue.<\/p>\n
