BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) \u2014 A high school and other landmarks in Delano named after labor leader Cesar Chavez are now under scrutiny. This raises a question: How does this affect Kern County and the culture considered the birthplace of the United Farm Workers Union?<\/p>\n
Cesar Chavez School, Cesar Chavez Lane, Cesar Chavez Park \u2014 The late activist\u2019s name is interwoven into the very fabric of Kern County and the Central Valley.<\/p>\n
But now, with a legacy in crisis, the people who once revered Chavez question his name and its place in our everyday lives.<\/p>\n
Dolores Huerta says Cesar Chavez assaulted her, fathered 2 of her children <\/a><\/p>\n \u201cSo obviously there is a lot of good work that he did,\u201d said Harveen Kaur, a Bakersfield resident. \u201cBut it\u2019s just very disheartening and extremely alarming that men in positions of power go unchecked for so long.\u201d<\/p>\n The city of Bakersfield revoked plans to rename H Street<\/a> as Cesar Chavez Boulevard. Kaur said it was the right move.<\/p>\n \u201cWe shouldn\u2019t be promoting somebody who is an abuser, and I think the city made the right decision in calling that to be canceled,\u201d said Kaur.<\/p>\n Kaur isn\u2019t alone \u2014 many who once admired Chavez feel the rug has been pulled from under them.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s honestly, it\u2019s very shocking,\u201d said Mike Gomez, another Bakersfield resident. \u201cLike you said, him being an icon \u2026 so much for civil rights and having some kind of very drastic news come out and something that\u2019s been hidden for like a very long time. Like, yeah, that\u2019s very shocking. It\u2019s very disturbing.\u201d<\/p>\n
