{"id":228434,"date":"2026-03-20T12:09:15","date_gmt":"2026-03-20T12:09:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/228434\/"},"modified":"2026-03-20T12:09:15","modified_gmt":"2026-03-20T12:09:15","slug":"san-diego-county-life-expectancy-rises-as-causes-of-death-shift-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/228434\/","title":{"rendered":"San Diego County Life Expectancy Rises as Causes of Death Shift | News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\tReading Time:   &lt; 1 minute<\/p>\n<p>San Diego\u00a0County\u00a0residents are living slightly longer,\u00a0according to new data from the County\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegocounty.gov\/content\/sdc\/hhsa\/programs\/phs\/community_health_statistics\/CHSU_Mortality.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Community Health Statistics Unit<\/a>.\u00a0The latest report shows\u00a0the region\u2019s life expectancy reached\u00a081.5 years,\u00a0higher than the national average\u00a0of\u00a079 years, and\u00a0in line\u00a0with California\u2019s\u00a0average of\u00a081.2\u00a0years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A child\u00a0born in San Diego in 2024\u00a0is\u00a0expected to live to 81.5 years, continuing a long-term trend of improved\u00a0health outcomes across the\u00a0county.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gaps Remain\u00a0But\u00a0Most Groups See Improvement\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Women in San Diego County continue to live longer than men, averaging 84 compared to 79 years. Among racial and ethnic groups, Asian residents had the longest life expectancy at 87.6 years, while Black residents had the shortest at 75.2 years. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese numbers represent our region and our many subcommunities throughout San Diego.\u201d said Dr. Sayone Thihalolipavan, M.D., M.P.H., County Public Health Officer. \u201cWhile life expectancy increasing is a trend in the right direction, we continue to see significant disparities across the County by geography, sex, race or ethnicity.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Where You Live Matters\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Coronado recorded the longest life expectancy in the region at 87.2 years. Lemon Grove had the shortest at 78.7 years, an 8.5-year gap between communities. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cancer\u00a0Remains Leading Cause of Death\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Updated 2024 data shows cancer continues to be the region\u2019s leading cause of death, followed by heart disease, stroke, unintentional injuries, and Alzheimer\u2019s Disease.
