The San Diego Gulls are ready to close out their season series with the Calgary Wranglers tonight at Pechanga Arena San Diego (5 p.m. PDT; TV: AHLTV on\u00a0FloHockey;\u00a0Radio: Gulls Audio Network).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
“We\u2019ve\u00a0got a Calgary team that’s very dangerous\u00a0offensively,”\u00a0head coach\u00a0Matt\u00a0McIlvane\u00a0said. “I think that our game is going to be more focused on ourselves\u00a0and continuing to build our game, but we know where you got a big challenge ahead of us.”<\/p>\n
San Diego has gone\u00a01-2-0-0 against Calgary this season and have the chance to tie the series up tonight.\u00a0The Wranglers\u00a0take the ninth-place spot in the Pacific Division and have a slim chance of making the playoffs as they only have nine games\u00a0remaining\u00a0after tonight.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Gulls\u00a0have found more success recently, going\u00a04-5-1-0\u00a0in their\u00a0past 10 contests. The team has\u00a068\u00a0points and is coming\u00a0off\u00a0an\u00a07-4 victory\u00a0against the Bakersfield Condors on Friday night.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Friday saw a lot of offensive\u00a0production and successful defense.\u00a0San Diego put up four goals in the first period for the first time this season\u00a0with\u00a0Judd Caulfield, Stian Solberg, Matthew Phillips,\u00a0and\u00a0Justin Bailey\u00a0finding the back of the net.\u00a0Tristan Luneau\u00a0kept the\u00a0scoring\u00a0going in the second\u00a0while\u00a0Nikita Nesterenko\u00a0and Cal Burke\u00a0added\u00a0two more\u00a0in the third.\u00a0Tomas Suchanek\u00a0protected the crease and earned his third consecutive victory, saving 15-of-19 shots.\u00a0The team successfully killed off four penalties and\u00a0capitalized\u00a0on their one\u00a0of their two\u00a0power\u00a0plays.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
“I think our kill has been pretty good,”\u00a0Tyson Hinds\u00a0said. “We put a lot of puck pressure on\u00a0them\u00a0and they had\u00a0to rim a lot of\u00a0pucks.\u00a0I think our face\u00a0offs\u00a0tonight\u00a0were\u00a0pretty good\u00a0too.\u00a0So, I think we did a good job putting pressure and limiting\u00a0their time with the puck.\u00a0I think\u00a0we’re\u00a0just going to\u00a0keep going that direction.”<\/p>\n
Locking down two more points was essential for San Diego as they fight to stay in their playoff position. The team aims to take two more\u00a0tonight and\u00a0keep climbing the rankings.\u00a0The Gulls have proved how capable they are as a team and\u00a0hope to make a deep run in what would be their first playoff appearance since 2022.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Following tonight\u2019s\u00a0contest,\u00a0the Gulls will head to\u00a0Abbotsford for a back-to-back series with the Canucks at Rogers Forum starting\u00a0Saturday, Mar. 28 (7 p.m. PDT).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
