Gavin Newsom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2025\/10\/23\/california-invests-over-140-million-to-support-planned-parenthood-health-centers-amid-trumps-efforts-to-defund\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">pledged<\/a> $140 million to Planned Parenthood locations in California on Oct. 24. On the same day, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul committed $35 million in funding to Planned Parenthood locations in New York.<\/p>\n<p>Both states are known for their abortion shield laws, which protect abortionists who mail abortion pills into states where they are illegal. Several women are suing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/265723\/texas-man-files-lawsuit-against-abortionist-who-sent-abortion-drugs-across-state-lines\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">California<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/261055\/texas-sues-new-york-abortionist-for-mailing-abortion-pills\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">New York<\/a> abortionists after being poisoned by or coerced into taking the abortion pill by the fathers of their children.<\/p>\n<p>New York and California join several other states that have made similar moves in light of the yearlong federal defunding of Planned Parenthood. <a href=\"https:\/\/coloradonewsline.com\/briefs\/colorado-legislature-passes-bill-to-fund-medicaid-reimbursements-for-planned-parenthood\/#:~:text=By:%20Delilah%20Brumer%20%2D%20August%2024,from%20funding%20most%20abortion%20services.\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Colorado<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/news\/as-president-trump-defunds-planned-parenthood-massachusetts-delivers-2-million-to-protect-access-to-reproductive-health-care\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Massachusetts<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cascadepbs.org\/news\/2025\/09\/washington-state-to-fund-planned-parenthood-after-medicaid-cuts\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Washington<\/a> have all taken similar steps to replace lost federal funding for Planned Parenthood over the past few months.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom said on Thursday that California is \u201cprotecting access to essential health care\u201d by providing funding for more than 100 locations across the state.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrump\u2019s efforts to defund Planned Parenthood put all our communities at risk as people seek basic health care from these community providers,\u201d Newsom said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2025\/10\/23\/california-invests-over-140-million-to-support-planned-parenthood-health-centers-amid-trumps-efforts-to-defund\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hochul in a similar vein said she is putting funding toward the 47 Planned Parenthood clinics in New York, alleging that pro-life politicians will \u201cstop at nothing to undermine women\u2019s health care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the face of congressional Republicans voting to defund Planned Parenthood, I\u2019ve directed the state to fund these vital services, protecting access to health care that thousands of New Yorkers rely on,\u201d Hochul said in a Friday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\/news\/governor-hochul-steps-protect-critical-health-care-provided-planned-parenthood-face-federal\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>                                              Hundreds of alternative clinics exist in both states\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A spokeswoman for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heartbeatinternational.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Heartbeat International<\/a>, a network that supports life-affirming pregnancy centers, told CNA there are many low-cost and even free alternatives to Planned Parenthood across the country \u2014 including hundreds of clinics and pregnancy centers in both New York and California.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Andrea Trudden said that \u201cwomen in California and New York already have access to a vast network of life-affirming care.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalifornia has more than 300 pregnancy help organizations and New York nearly 200,\u201d Trudden said, citing Heartbeat International\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/\/www.heartbeatinternational.org\/resources\/resources-by-topic\/networking\/2025-worldwide-directory-desk-reference-copy__;!!GfxeEQ!XMUgcX7ExRejMO16UxJAHGMUV3P5G5uX3NL6cicldYeFEl-u-s7lMYIq0f2QAFK2fuudwrk-NR1oIWSrtA49J6s%24\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Worldwide Directory of Pregnancy Help<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese centers offer practical support, compassionate care, and resources to women facing unplanned pregnancies, empowering them to choose life for their children and themselves,\u201d she continued.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For women who need health care not related to pregnancy, Trudden noted that both states are \u201cwell served\u201d by Federally Qualified Health Centers, which are centers that provide \u201ccomprehensive, low-cost medical care for women and families.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As of 2024, California had more than 170 of these clinics, while New York had more than 60, Trudden said, citing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/state-health-policy-data\/state-indicator\/community-health-center-sites-and-visits\/?currentTimeframe=0&amp;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">report<\/a> by KFF, a health policy institute.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf leaders truly cared about women\u2019s health, they would invest in these community-based organizations that meet the needs of women before, during, and after pregnancy \u2014 not in the nation\u2019s largest abortion provider,\u201d Trudden added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-0\" style=\"text-align: center\">(Story continues below)<\/p>\n<p>\n    Subscribe to our daily newsletter<\/p>\n<p>Kelsey Pritchard, a spokeswoman at Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, told CNA that in California, Planned Parenthood \u201cis choosing to shutter primary care rather than give up profiting from abortions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Orange and San Bernardino counties, Planned Parenthood will continue<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.ocregister.com\/2025\/10\/13\/planned-parenthood-closes-melody-health-lays-off-81-staff\/__;!!GfxeEQ!XNnBBd2q11thagMrt4I9v8KC8ZD2MAdSckvuZE1Pb_91H3IgfEsV8_7-zP2ZRwZbZYovg0yCz1T4ZtZc%24\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"> to offer abortions <\/a>while closing primary care facilities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn California, New York, and across the country, Planned Parenthoods are outnumbered by far better options and the pro-life movement is happy to help women locate the care they need,\u201d Pritchard said, citing <a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/lozierinstitute.org\/analysis-planned-parenthood-isnt-irreplaceable-for-womens-health-care\/__;!!GfxeEQ!XNnBBd2q11thagMrt4I9v8KC8ZD2MAdSckvuZE1Pb_91H3IgfEsV8_7-zP2ZRwZbZYovg0yCz3F8LKDm%24\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">reports<\/a> by the <a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/fact-sheet-looking-up-medicaid-providers-in-your-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Charlotte Lozier Institute<\/a> on<a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/realchoices\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"> community care centers<\/a> and pregnancy centers for women.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jennie Bradley Lichter, the president of the March for Life, criticized politicians for prioritizing abortion funding instead of care for women and children.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolitical leaders who prioritize funding for Planned Parenthood leave no doubt where their priorities lie: and it is not with women and children,\u201d Bradley Lichter told CNA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a shame that the leaders of states like California and New York aren\u2019t choosing to pour their resources into institutions that truly support moms, like the huge number of pregnancy resource centers located in each of those states,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Women deserve better than the \u201ctragedy\u201d of abortion, Bradley Lichter said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe at March for Life want women to know that when their state leaders fall short and leave them in the hands of Big Abortion, pro-life Americans will stand in the gap and help them find the love and care they need,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p>                                                          Defunding Planned Parenthood: a \u2018life-saving\u2019 act\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman for Live Action called the defunding of Planned Parenthood \u201cone of the most lifesaving acts Congress has taken in decades,\u201d noting that the federal government stopped funding the organization that \u201ckills over 400,000 children every year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat victory must be made permanent when the one-year cutoff expires next July,\u201d Noah Brandt told CNA. \u201cYet pro-abortion states like California and New York are working to undo that progress, using taxpayer money to expand abortion through all nine months and to ship abortion pills nationwide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFederal funding for Planned Parenthood must never return, and states that promote abortion should be held accountable for enabling the mass killing and sterilization of American children,\u201d Brandt said.<\/p>\n<p>Pritchard added that although Planned Parenthood is \u201cconstantly scheming to grow their grip on taxpayer money,\u201d the pro-life movement has seen wins around the nation \u2014 most especially, the federal defunding of Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake no mistake, they are losing big in Congress, in courts, and increasingly in the hearts and minds of Americans,\u201d Pritchard said.<\/p>\n<p>                    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/author\/846\/kate-quinones\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n                      <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Kate Qui\u00f1ones\" height=\"96\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761415820_314_wPrKsZoqQh83ESDP8Q8ntqE62IlHGhvGjNJAEQ5I.jpg\"\/><br \/>\n                    <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kate Qui\u00f1ones is a staff writer for Catholic News Agency and a fellow of the College Fix.
