The closure was announced via an email to students and faculty from PSFA Assistant Dean Alane Lockwood, co-founder of the PARC.

The center, which opened in October 2021, provided PSFA students with professional tutoring services and a study space.

According to Lockwood in the email announcing the closure, the center lacks structural funding from the university to remain in operation. Its initial funding came from one-time COVID relief funds and the Graduation Initiative 2025, a CSU-wide initiative to foster higher graduation rates.

The one-time money was stretched to cover the costs of the center for multiple years, and once those funds were depleted, the college covered the remaining costs, according to Lockwood.

A $20,000 CSU Equity in Action grant was awarded to the PARC Center in May 2022 to pilot an embedded tutoring program, which placed tutors inside select classrooms to make tutoring more accessible to students.

“This year we ended the embedded tutoring program to scale back rather than eliminate the program entirely,” Rebecca Tedesco, director and co-founder of the PARC, said. “It was a funding saving measure.”

Tedesco and Lockwood have explored unique funding opportunities in order to keep the PARC running, including turning the center into an educational research center or establishing a campaign for external funding. However, both of these options have been deemed unattainable.

Research facilities at SDSU are typically led by tenured or tenure-track faculty whose roles include conducting research, a category that does not include Lockwood and Tedesco, according to Tedesco.

“Neither Lanie [Lockwood], nor I had the bandwidth to launch and see through a campaign that would have provided adequate external funding to run the PARC,” Tedesco said.

The PARC requires funding for two academic years at a time in order to continue operations. This structure gives undergraduate and graduate student tutors the time and sustainability they need to hone their craft and reach their full potential, Tedesco said.

“What we were trying to avoid was a situation where we would hire and train a whole new cohort of tutors, and then at the end of their first year, just as they’re starting to get great at their craft, have to let them all go,” Tedesco said.

The PARC is the second tutoring program in SDSU history to be certified by the College Reading and Learning Association.

Providing quality instruction is the PARC’s main goal, according to Tedesco and Lockwood.

The timing of the closure comes at a natural stopping point for the tutors and is in anticipation of an unknown “higher-up budget situation trickling down” in the next academic year, Lockwood said.

“We wanted to be transparent, and we wanted to not have to announce an abrupt closure,” Tedesco said. “One of the reasons why we wanted to tell people now is so that the students would also have a chance to find other places on campus, to talk with us about how they’re feeling about all of this.”

Despite the closure, Tedesco will continue to offer tutoring services herself throughout the 2026-27 academic year. She urges students with questions or those in need of support to reach out to her as the switch is made.

“There are pockets of tutoring all over campus,” Tedesco said. “When in doubt, ask.”

The College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts Academic Resource Center will cease operations on…

[28
74,76,75
0":"post-232696","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-san-diego","8":"tag-san-diego","9":"tag-san-diego-headlines","10":"tag-san-diego-news
["GET
