Food assistance program CalFresh will have its benefits delayed in November due to the ongoing federal government shutdown<\/a>, officials said on Friday.<\/p>\n

CalFresh<\/a>, which is known federally as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or food stamps, provides low-income households with groceries. Although the program is handled by the state, funding for it comes from federal entities, which have been impacted by the ongoing shutdown.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Social Services Agency issues on average $62 million a month in CalFresh benefits,\u201d Director An Tran said in a statement. \u201cThis will not only have an impact on the families and individuals receiving benefits, but also the local economy. For every dollar of benefit spent at local retailers accepting EBT, up to $1.50 is generated.\u201d<\/p>\n

In anticipation of an influx of households seeking support during the absence of CalFresh benefits, Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered the California National Guard to help<\/a> food bank missions. Up to $80 million in state funds are also slated to support those in need, according to the governor.<\/p>\n

In wake of the impending benefits\u2019 delay, Newsom described the occurrence as President Donald Trump of \u201ctaking food out of people\u2019s mouths.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is serious, this is urgent \u2013 and requires immediate action,\u201d he said in a statement. \u201cMillions of Americans rely on food benefits to feed their families, and while Republicans in Washington drag their feet, California is stepping up once again to fill in the gaps. I\u2019m expediting state funds for food banks and directing the California National Guard and California Volunteers to help distribute this food to families. As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, California is working to ensure CalFresh recipients don’t go hungry while food prices are spiking under President Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n

The federal shutdown began this month after Democrats and Republicans failed to agree on government funding legislation for 2026. If Congress fails again to come to an agreement, CalFresh benefits are expected to halt on Nov. 1.<\/p>\n
