{"id":233598,"date":"2026-03-24T03:45:11","date_gmt":"2026-03-24T03:45:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/233598\/"},"modified":"2026-03-24T03:45:11","modified_gmt":"2026-03-24T03:45:11","slug":"san-diego-to-play-key-role-in-upcoming-artemis-ii-recovery-after-historic-moon-mission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/233598\/","title":{"rendered":"San Diego to play key role in upcoming Artemis II recovery after historic moon mission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NASA&#8217;s Artemis II mission will send astronauts around the moon for the first time in decades, ending with a splashdown off the San Diego coast.<\/p>\n<p>SAN DIEGO \u2014 It\u2019s a mission that will take astronauts around the moon and bring them back down just off San Diego.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/feature\/our-artemis-crew\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">\u00a0NASA\u2019s Artemis II<\/a> is set to launch soon, marking the first time humans have traveled into deep space in more than 50 years.<\/p>\n<p>Four astronauts will spend about ten days orbiting the moon before returning to Earth, with a planned splashdown roughly 60 miles off the San Diego coast.<\/p>\n<p>NASA is targeting an April first launch from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, pending weather and final checks. Once the crew returns, a coordinated recovery effort in San Diego will already be in place.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Daniel Florez, a rescue test director for Artemis II, is helping to lead recovery planning, working closely with the U.S. Navy in San Diego.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also utilize resources, you know, helicopters from Naval Base North Island. We have medical teams from Camp Pendleton, from the Marine units up there,\u201d Florez said.<\/p>\n<p>A Navy vessel based in San Diego will retrieve the capsule after splashdown, while Navy divers out of Coronado will be the first to reach the astronauts in the water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey&#8217;re going to be the ones that are going to be opening the hatch and greeting the astronauts as they come home,\u201d Florez said. \u201cThat team is comprised of specialized divers. They have doctors, they have a medical team, undersea medical officers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>San Diego has already played a role in preparing for the mission.<\/p>\n<p>About a year ago,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbs8.com\/article\/news\/local\/artemis-ii-recovery-train-off-san-diego-coast\/509-838f3a42-ef46-47e4-bc1d-6ed84987de79\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">\u00a0crews conducted a full recovery test off the coast<\/a>, sending a capsule 60 miles into the Pacific with four people inside.
