{"id":234532,"date":"2026-03-24T19:25:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-24T19:25:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/234532\/"},"modified":"2026-03-24T19:25:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-24T19:25:08","slug":"san-diegos-general-dynamics-nassco-awarded-3-9-million-to-design-navy-oiler-ship-san-diego-union-tribune","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/234532\/","title":{"rendered":"San Diego\u2019s General Dynamics-NASSCO awarded $3.9 million to design Navy oiler ship \u2013 San Diego Union-Tribune"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Defense has awarded San Diego\u2019s General Dynamics-NASSCO $3.9 million to produce conceptual designs for a new generation of Navy oiler ships, work that could lead to large construction contracts at one of the region\u2019s largest employers.<\/p>\n<p>NASSCO will compete with Canada\u2019s Vard Marine, which was given $4.5 million for the same kind of design.<\/p>\n<p>The Navy says it is looking to augment its existing combat logistics ships, which include the 746-foot Lewis-class oilers that NASSCO has and will build at its yard in Barrio Logan.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/crs-product\/IF11674\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Next Generation Logistics Ship<\/a>\u00a0is meant to be a smaller vessel that can refuel, rearm and resupply Navy and Marine vessels throughout the world.<\/p>\n<p>NASSCO is the last major shipbuilder on the West Coast and currently employs about 3,500 workers, which is half of its operating capacity. Earlier this year, Chief of Naval Operations Adm.
