It\u2019s shaping up to be a busy \u2014 and possibly historic \u2014 week for the San Diego Wave.<\/p>\n
San Diego will face the rival Portland Thorns at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Snapdragon Stadium in a rematch of last year\u2019s National Women\u2019s Soccer League playoff match.<\/p>\n
The match is the Wave\u2019s second game in three days. A third match of the week, against the Chicago Stars, is set for Saturday.<\/p>\n
The Wave have never won three games in the same week before. The club last played three matches in the same week in October 2024, losing two NWSL games and one Concacaf W Champions Cup match in a six-day span.<\/p>\n
And then there\u2019s the even bigger news. Reports surfaced last week that the club had agreed to a record contract with United States Women\u2019s National Team standout Catarina Macario. The NWSL transfer window has closed; all that\u2019s left is for the team to announce that the Torrey Pines High School graduate is officially joining the club.<\/p>\n
San Diego (1-1-0) is coming off its first win of the young National Women\u2019s Soccer League season, a 2-1 triumph over the Utah Royals on Sunday in Sandy, Utah.\u00a0 Lia Godfrey played the hero, notching her first NWSL goal in the 86th minute to break a tie.\u00a0 The club was without starting goalie DiDi Hara\u010di\u0107, who was out with an injury. Rookie Leah Freeman started in her place, making two saves and earning her first NWSL win in goal.<\/p>\n
Wave coach Jonas Eidevall said he had no update on Hara\u010di\u0107\u2019s status heading into Wednesday\u2019s match.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, unfortunately not,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The visiting Thorns are 2-0-0, beating the Washington Spirit and Seattle Reign on back-to-back Fridays. They have yet to allow a goal this season.<\/p>\n
\u201cTough opponent,\u201d\u00a0 Eidevall said. \u201c(Portland) started league play here really, really well. So it\u2019s going to be a really good test for us. And Portland\u2019s been really, really good in the midfield in these first two matches.\u201d<\/p>\n
