Leslie \u201cTerry\u201d Jackson, 89, of Berkeley, passed away peacefully on Jan. 27. <\/p>\n
Terry was born in Winnipeg, Canada, an only child to parents Harold Jackson and Ivy Marriott. The family emigrated to San Diego, making the long trip via car when Terry was in grammar school. They eventually settled in Burlingame, where Terry graduated from Burlingame High School. He became a U.S. citizen when he was 17, then joined the U.S. Coast Guard. While he did not love military service, he loved his adventures during that time and enjoyed telling stories about them for the rest of his life.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Returning from service, he attended UC Berkeley, where he earned both an undergraduate degree and a master\u2019s in electrical engineering. Over the course of his career, he built the power supplies for the Bevatron (a particle accelerator) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and for the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in Palo Alto. He received US patent No. 3,431,502\u00a0in 1969\u00a0for a device called Target Positioner for Accelerator External Beam, and with characteristic modesty, left it to be discovered by his family after his death.<\/p>\n
Terry raised three children with his first wife, Rowena, imbuing them with his love of music, Pinecrest and the Sierras, history and technical projects. He shared his passion for music with many, playing chamber music on the clarinet (and saxophone) throughout his adult life. He enjoyed a rich life and extended family with his second wife, Carmelle.<\/p>\n
Terry took a genuine interest in people and will be remembered for his warmth and steady presence. He is survived by his wife Carmelle Knudsen; his children Ross (wife, Helle Folkersen), Diane (husband, Angus Finney), and Paul (wife, Wendy Weiden); stepson Soren Knudsen (wife, Linda); grandchildren Amelia, Cole, Charlie, Ivey, Erica, and Gemma; step-grandchildren Vivian and Weston, and dog Andy.<\/p>\n
All are invited to celebrate Terry\u2019s life at a memorial concert on Saturday April 4, 3 p.m., in Unity Hall, First Congregational Church of Berkeley, 2345 Channing Way.<\/p>\n
