California Assembly member Avelino Valencia, whose district includes Angel Stadium, has \u201cintroduced state legislation that could require any sale or new lease of the stadium property<\/a> be conditioned upon the team reverting to the Anaheim Angels name,\u201d according to Bill Shaikin of the L.A. TIMES. At the same time, Anaheim Mayor Ashleigh Aitken has asked the city attorney to \u201cexplore whether the Angels have violated their current lease by dropping the Anaheim name from legal documents.\u201d Valencia\u2019s bill, which is \u201cdubbed the \u2018Home Run for Anaheim Act,\u2019\u201d aims to \u201cmandate what the city of Anaheim could not negotiate in its ill-fated deal\u201d with Angels owner Arte Moreno in 2019: If a team owner \u201cwants to develop the parking lots around the city stadium, the team should carry the city\u2019s name.\u201d The Angels\u2019 current stadium lease extends through 2032, with the team holding options to extend the lease through 2038. The bill notes that if the city can \u201cobtain an exemption from the Surplus Land Act,\u201d which requires public property up for sale first be made available for public housing, then the team could \u201cnot buy or lease Angel Stadium unless \u2018materials refer to that team as the Anaheim Angels\u2019\u201d (L.A.
