{"id":236376,"date":"2026-03-25T20:55:22","date_gmt":"2026-03-25T20:55:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/236376\/"},"modified":"2026-03-25T20:55:22","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T20:55:22","slug":"eric-abril-to-be-sentenced-for-roseville-park-shootout-kidnapping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/236376\/","title":{"rendered":"Eric Abril to be sentenced for Roseville park shootout, kidnapping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A man who pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in connection with a shootout at a popular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/sacramento\/news\/roseville-park-shooting-2-hostages-1-killed-chp-officer-hurt-suspect-in-custody\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Roseville park<\/a> is set to be sentenced on Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Eric Abril, 38, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/sacramento\/news\/eric-abril-pleads-guilty-roseville-kidnapping-park-shootout\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pled guilty<\/a> earlier this month to first-degree murder and admitted the murder was committed in the commission of a kidnapping, the Placer County District Attorney&#8217;s Office said. He also admitted to attempted murder of a peace officer and kidnapping.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors said Abril is expected to be sentenced to life in prison. Sentencing is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. and can be watched on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/sacramento\/live\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CBS Sacramento&#8217;s livestream<\/a>, located in the video player above.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/sacramento\/news\/roseville-mahany-park-shooting-eric-abril-wrongful-death-suit-chp\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James MacEgan<\/a>\u00a0was killed and his wife, Patty MacEgan, was wounded in the shootout at Mahany Park. Patty was then taken hostage, with a video showing Abril using her as a human shield.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The shootout stemmed from the California Highway Patrol serving a high-risk search warrant at the park in connection with a freeway shooting in Sacramento County.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When officers tried to confront Abril, he began shooting at the officers, who fired back as Abril ran toward a batting cage.
